NBA Trade Deadline: Should Knicks sacrifice youth for Arron Afflalo or Wesley Matthews?
Making up trades and throwing them on the internet isnt really my thing. It usually elicits too much vitriol from the readers for what its worth. You either come off as a know-it-all or as a complete imbecile.
But since Knicks general manager Glen Grunwald is sitting on his hands at the deadline, here are a few trade scenarios that would offer a change for a team that is 14-14 over its last 28 games.
Iman Shumpert and Steve Novak to the Orlando Magic for Arron Afflalo:
In general, Im not a fan of trading Iman Shumpert. Hes a natural athlete who is struggling to recover from ACL surgery and given another offseason, Im confident hell be fine.
But if the Knicks think that this is their year, then hes the best asset they have to acquire that final piece.
In Afflalo the Knicks would get a capable scorer and an elite defender, who, at 27 years of age, is in the prime of his career. Shumpert hasnt been the same player on defense he was last year, but Afflalo is still considered among the best perimeter defenders in the league.
The move would also go along with the Knicks former Denver Nuggets roster theme, so former Nuggets GM and current Knicks VP of basketball operations Mark Warkentien should be happy.
The Magic, meanwhile, would get a young talent (Shumpert) to continue their rebuilding process and theyd get one of the leagues premiere shooters (Novak), who could draw some trade interest over the summer as well. Novak has three years on his deal after this season, but his deal is for less than $4 million per year, so his contract is movable.
Afflalo is owed $7.5 million per year through the 2015-2016 season.
Novak, Shumpert to the Phoenix Suns for Jermaine ONeal and Wesley Johnson:
Johnson is in the final year of his deal, so the Knicks would have to decide if they wish to keep him and for how much after the season (he still has his Bird rights), but the immediate benefit to this trade would be acquiring ONeal, who we mentioned earlier is having a surprisingly efficient season.
Rasheed Wallace and Marcus Camby are both up in the air with their foot injuries, so ONeal would become an immediate contributor.
Johnson, meanwhile, isnt playing much for Phoenix because he doesnt add much offensively. However, he is an excellent athlete with solid defensive skills.
Johnsons problem in the NBA has been that hes a poor ball handler and shooter, but that wouldnt be a problem on the Knicks, who have plenty of both. Johnson would be able to focus on his defense and rebounding, which are both above average
The Suns are interested in Shumpert, obviously, but they would have to find another taker for Novak, who doesnt seem like a good fit for that franchises youth movement.
Novak and Shumpert to the Portland Trail Blazers for Wesley Matthews:
This is effectively the same deal as the aforementioned Afflalo trade. The Knicks would get a solid defender and an intelligent player on offense while the Blazers would continue building their future.
Again, Novak wouldnt be a good fit for Portland, but moving a contract thats $3.75 million per year is easier than moving Matthews, which will be nearly $7 million next season.
