He had Rich Rod's players and tried to force them into a traditional offense instead of what was best suited for them and then realized that it didn't make any sense. So he ran Rich Rod's O and Mattison coached the players up to be respectable on defense. Basically, his first season is what we thought Rich Rod would be. Once it was up to him to coach players up himself and institute a plan, he failed miserably. He was never qualified for the job and got lucky with Denard Robinson being an all time great Michigan player and bailing his dumbass out.
