it just confirms what people should already know
There is no such thing as a consciousness. Its all the product of neurons responding to external stimuli. We only call it "something" to describe the expertnce but its no different from a squid neuron reacting in a certain way

couldn't consciousness be us controlling our neural responses though? unless you're implying we have no control over our thoughts.

makes no sense. You're responding to a set of stimuli
But as it appears, we can have some control over our stimuli. Deciding on what to believe, and curbing certain instincts...this in turn translates to the complexity of our consciousness. So it'd be interesting to see how this ability relates to the way our neurons work, if at all.

We are our genetic programming, and that's it. None of us chose to like what we like. Some would rather be asexual than hetero or homo, but that can't be controlled yet. I'm sure we would prefer not to have to shyt everyday or even eat, but that also is out of our control. Science may one day eliminate those needs.
