So, my definition of consciousness for 99% of people who aren't introspective enough to understand that there isn't a "mind" unit may align with what you've posted, but it doesn't mean that in the raw nature of what we're talking about that such a thing may even exist.

The next question would be why all of out the other predators – who probably got more proteins than humans did through a better diet made possible by their physical attributes – didn't develop the same, or even just more similar, mental faculties, but I suspect the answer is in our brain's capabilities to develop said building blocks.
