Just because words are in dictionaries doesn't mean they maintain their relevance with the latest science.

So, my definition of consciousness for 99% of people who aren't introspective enough to understand that there isn't a "mind" unit may align with what you've posted, but it doesn't mean that in the raw nature of what we're talking about that such a thing may even exist.

answer the question tho, what is your definition of consciousness?

They are the building blocks for the brain. When we gained access to more protein, our cortex expanded rapidly.
The next question would be why all of out the other predators – who probably got more proteins than humans did through a better diet made possible by their physical attributes – didn't develop the same, or even just more similar, mental faculties, but I suspect the answer is in our brain's capabilities to develop said building blocks. I just can't shake the thought that nature wise humans are a strange anomaly...well, even our planet is a strange anomaly within our solar system. So I guess I shouldn't be too surprised.

Or maybe we're very similar to other organisms (including insects) and I'm just having problems acknowledging it.
