I get the feeling a lot of the people who sat out the last elections thinking both candiditates are the same are definelty regretting it now

There’s a going to be a massive black turnout for the democrats probably on a par with Obama in 2008 along with other minoroties and white democrats too.

They won’t make the same mistake again in 2020. Even the midterm election this November which usually gets a low turnout will see a massive turnout I’m predicting. If they can’t get Trump out now at least make him a dud president for the remaining two years before getting rid.

Yeah, they need a progressive candidate then. Being anti-Trump is not going to be good enough. Plus despite the news he really hasn't done anything legislative wise people are really pissed off about. His tax reform isn't popular but it really doesn't matter much to people already broke.
Seems this thread is also conceding he will finish his term. I remember when that was a pipe dream. lol

Most people don’t even watch the news and are completely unaffected by what’s been happening.

The average american’s life has been relatively unchanged since trump took his office. They still wake up and send their kids to school, they still go to work, they still go to Starbucks... they still go on social media and forums like this one and yap about whatever nonsense is on their mind that day. The economy hasn’t crashed, we haven’t been attacked, gas is still the same price... I just don’t see this mass movement of motivated people getting out to vote.

I think trump/hillary had a smaller turnout than obama/romney. if anything perhaps people are becoming less interested in the sensationalism and nastiness of politics in general. It’s always been a circus, trump just exposed it for what it is.

Yeah, I think it'll have to take a economic collapse or a big event on trump's shoulders to bring people out if, if, there isn't a great candidate that people like. How much folks (can) come out for the mid-terms will give a big indication into that.

The 24/7 trump cycle IMO will seemingly turns more people off than galvanize.

Just to get out in front a few arguments that are used to be predictive.

Let's say the Dems sweep the midterms, and I think they will, it's still not indicative of what will happen in 2020. The classic example is the Republican wave in 2010 yet Obama retained the White House in 2012. Partisanship and participation are different than in midterms.

To go off the first point, partisanship in a presidential year is the highest and it tends to get increasingly polarized as you get closer to Election Day. Meaning that even if he had approval ratings in the toilet now, I don't think it tells you anything how people are going to vote in 2020. If polling trends are anything to go by I don't even think you can predict 4 months out. Romney and Hillary were shown as winning somewhere around August.

What you end up getting is that Republicans and democrat partisans solidify their support near election time because despite their gripes they will never vote the other team. Independents and fence sitters also wait until the last minute to make a pick.

Democrats hammer turns out and I see it on here too. But sometimes it seems as far as what to do to drive turnout gets less focus. You need someone people are excited to vote for. Some people believe it should just be obvious and people should just be "adults" and vote for what they feel is the rational choice. But politics everywhere is just a fancy popularity contest so you need to work to get people to want to take time out of their day to vote for you.

If Democrats can do that, I think they have a shot .

It had a significantly smaller turn out. Trump/Hillary election had less turn out than BOTH of Obama's wins. Mitt Romney had more votes in his loss to Obama than Trump had in his win against Hillary. This election made people stay home, Dems should learn people turn out to vote FOR something, not to just stand against something. Say what you want about Trump but he at least got his half formed ideas and goals out, half the people who voted for Clinton couldn't tell you WHAT she was running on.
