Canada just pulled out of the 2020 Olympics

"While we recognize the inherent complexities around a postponement, nothing is more important than the health and safety of our athletes and the world community," the Canadian Olympic Committee and Canadian Paralympic Committee said in a joint statement Sunday. "This is not solely about athlete health -- it is about public health."

Australia just pulled out of the 2020 Olympics

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) said on Monday it could not assemble a team for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics due to the coronavirus outbreak and that its athletes should prepare for the Games to be postponed to 2021.

It's a wrap brehs. 2020 Olympics ain't happening. Maybe we get a 2021 Olympics.

First time Olympics has been canceled since World War II.

I think I remember reading somewhere that the olympics must be in 2020, which is why there is all this reluctance to cancel.
Tokyo should just delay until November and see what the world looks like in a few months. :manny:

It's the Summer Olympics, Tokyo isn't brutally cold in November or anything but it's still around high 40's-low 60's weather. That's not really warm enough for a lot of the outdoor events.
But yes, the cities that host the Olympics absolutely count on the money that is brought in from the event and it would be a massive economic blow to Japan for the Olympics to be postponed or canceled but it is what it is

They have to postpone it, not even about the infection “still being active” in July, this is interrupting the way some of these athletes train as well as the qualifying events possibly being disrupted.

Then you have a big player like Russia who suspiciously has very low/unreported CV rates, who knows what shyt they bring to the olympics aside from PED’s.

Ain't Russia out of the cut for this Olympics anyway?

But yeah, when I saw that Canada had cancelled the first thing I thought of was training and preparation. Lots of athletes who can't be getting ready in any normal state right now. Has qualifying even finished for everyone?

I thought the athletes just can’t compete for “team Russia” but can be unaffiliated

and nope, some quals have been cancelled, US track is still scheduled for June, just so much up in the air right now
