The Giants are the worst kind of bad: expensive and bad

What’s the plan at quarterback?

Daniel Jones, baby. Honestly, that’s fine for at least one more year with the quarterback landscape looking as weak as it is. Their problems, this season at least, on offense come more from key players being unavailable and coaching malpractice rather than overtly horrible play from Danny Dimes.

Prior to injuring his neck, Jones had shown an ability to be more careful with the ball than in years past. In a year where most of the quarterback options are lateral moves to Jones, it makes the most sense to bring him back for another year and pray that the supporting cast around him gets better.

There are worse spots to be in than with a mobile quarterback that can throw a deep ball and has cut back on his fumbles. Jones may not be a guy that really elevates the supporting cast, but he should be able to operate an offense with the right pieces.

The Giants are in the unenviable position of being bad with no cap space. According to Spotrac, the Giants are projected to have just $3.5 million in cap space for 2022.

How?! This team is bad!

Luckily, there are some moves they can make to add relief and give them a little bit of room to work with in free agency. If they were to cut Blake Martinez, Sterling Shepard and Kyle Rudolph they can clear roughly $18 million in cap space — all three moves make sense just based on how cash strapped they are. Letting go of a longtime Giant like Shepard would hurt, but it might be a move that needs to be made.

Here’s the good news for the Giants: they have two first-round picks. Two first-round picks they desperately need to get impact players on the roster for an affordable, cost-controlled price. According to Tankathon, the Giants are currently projected to have the fifth pick in the draft, which is their own, and the eighth pick in the draft, a pick they acquired from the Bears in the Justin Fields trade.

Trust the board. Pick the Good Players. The Giants need a ton of them. Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton would form a hellacious duo long term with current safety Xavier McKinney. If they can grab an offensive tackle like Alabama’s Evan Neal or Mississippi State’s Charles Cross to play across Andrew Thomas that would give Jones nice protection on the edges as he continues to work on his strip sack problem. At the very least, Thomas has developed into a very strong left tackle for the Giants. Two good tackles never hurt anyone.

Where it gets tricky for the Giants in free agency is the fact that they need roughly five million dollars in cap space to sign their incoming rookie class in 2022. Since they’re already starting so low, they might not be able to get many impact free agents onto the team unless they’re willing to restructure some of their big time contracts.

That’s a similar situation that the Falcons found themselves in before they traded Julio Jones to the Titans. With the information that’s currently available, it’s hard to imagine the Giants being major players in free agency next year. Just a few plugs and pieces to help fill out the roster while the big ticket guys already on the team attempt to get healthy.

Not a great outlook for the Giants, but at least they have some quality talent at the top of the roster to work with if they can shore up the offensive staff.

Does anyone else not like the use of college position jersey numbers? It’s weird in the NFL. Makes it seem less professional and official.

What game are you at?

I always try to get in early. It's always a bytch getting into Gillette Stadium, and it doesn't help that they have the worst parking and traffic out of ANY NFL team.
