Artur Samarin (r.), a 23-year-old Ukranian national, posed as a high school student after his visa expired. He even posed with Rep. Patty Kim in 2014.
Police said he first came to the U.S. on a three-month work visa and then got a tourist visa that expired in March 2013. He enrolled as a freshman six months later. Police said Samarin used a fake birth date and Potts’ name to get a social security card, a driver’s license and other U.S.-issued documents.
Under the Potts name, Samarin posed as an all-American teen. He was inducted into the National Honor Society in 2014 for his 4.16 GPA and posed with state Rep. Patty Kim at the ceremony.
“Asher Potts, #HBG HS soph with a 4.16 GPA in ROTC is a new member of the Nat'l Honor Society. #goingplaces #proud,” she tweeted in May 2014.
More recently, Samarin sat on a youth town hall panel where he answered questions about ways to prevent violence among teenagers. He suggested good parents should invite troubled kids into their homes as a way of mentorship.
