3-5 Degree Rise in Arctic Temperatures Called 'Inevitable'

Sharp and potentially devastating temperature rises of 3C to 5C in the Arctic are now inevitable even if the world succeeds in cutting greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris agreement, research has found.

Winter temperatures at the north pole are
likely to rise by at least 3C above pre-industrial levels by mid-century, and there could be further rises to between 5C and 9C above the recent average for the region, according to the UN. Such changes would result in rapidly melting ice and permafrost, leading to sea level rises and potentially to even more destructive levels of warming. Scientists fear Arctic heating could trigger a climate "tipping point" as melting permafrost releases the powerful greenhouse gas methane into the atmosphere, which in turn could create a runaway warming effect. "What happens in the Arctic does not stay in the Arctic," said Joyce Msuya, the acting executive director of UN Environment...

Even if all carbon emissions were to be halted immediately, the Arctic region would still warm by more than 5C by the century's end, compared with the baseline average from 1986 to 2005, according to the study from UN Environment. That is because so much carbon has already been poured into the atmosphere. The oceans also have become vast stores of heat, the effect of which is being gradually revealed by changes at the poles and on global weather systems, and will continue to be felt for decades to come.

Too many people politicized the issue...:mjcry:

and Now your grand kids and great grand kids gonna live in a fukked up planet where oxygen is scarce and weather patterns too extreme to predict.

I don't believe so... I believe political forces will eventually have to yield to technology and stop blocking it for political gain/advantage

Which will open humanity back up to its true crisis, our constant reliance on some other source to handle our problems for us. The way we interact with our habitat doesn't make sense. Other animals exhibit this type of behaviour in their communities and we call them invasive species. We have been and continue to destroy the planet because...?

We're the aliens:wow:

I’m not attached to earth like that:yeshrug:The sooner we can become cyborgs and begin colonizing other planets the better.

Once it became politicized/weaponized it was over...:mjcry:
The assembly heard that there was still a need to fulfil the aims of the 2015 Paris agreement on climate change and to take further action that could stave off some of the worst effects of warming in the near term. “We need to make substantial near-term cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, black carbon and other so-called short-lived climate pollutants all over the world,” said Kimmo Tiilikainen, Finland’s environment minister.

Convient article edit. :mjlol:

:childplease: if you think earth is that disposable I hope you don't have kids :francis:

Colonizing other planets, if it ever happens, is hundreds of years away. Earth is all we got for the foreseeable future.

Proposal for U.N. to study climate-cooling technologies rejected | Reuters

There is clearly an agenda and exploring technological solutions doesn’t serve it...
shyts purely about politics at this point... and it’s disgusting.

Keep in mind they are rejecting the study of alternatives...not the implementation.

The environment should never be about politics, but unfortunately tribalism and corporate greed made it that way. It’s funny thinking back that Ronald Reagan signed the Montreal Protocol, against his own parties wishes, because he knew we needed to protect the ozone layer. He listened and trusted the decision of scientists. Trusted their expertise in their research and enacted policy changes that helped. It was an issue bigger than politics. It was a matter of public health and the environment. That would not happen today.

Honestly I wish global warming was better understood back then because maybe better policies would be in place. As a result I stand by what I said in many threads, the world will burn.
