I'm well into my 20s and Carl Lewis was never as popular as Wayne Gretzkey. Magic etc. That's ludicrous. Magic Johnson was making over 5 million in endorsements in the 80s. He had the shoe deal with converse, a shytty game on NES which I used to own, I think Magic was doing ads for coca cola and McDonald's too. What was Carl Lewis marketing? Queen greatest hits cds?

Carl lewis got a few magazine covers and shyt but he was never popping like any of the athletes you mentioned.

And props to the posters above me shouting out Michael Johnson. I'd @ u guys but I'm on my phone. Michael Johnson was dominant.

See above post. You've been wrong about everything but all of the sudden you're right about this? Please stop. This thread is literally the first time in my entire life I've seen people question Lewis' status as an all time great.

Whatever you say dude. I call people out on the bullshyt and ya'll go and move the goalposts to something opinion based because ya'll don't have counter arguments. Dude was as big as any American sports star at the time. For some reason that irks ya'll but it was true.

you just said Carl Lewis was a bigger star than Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and Michael Jordan, Joe Montana, etc.

Bullshyt was me being nice, I could have said a lot worse than that.

The biggest star in America doesnt get dropped by Nike, and cant get an endorsement to save his life. No need to lie over this.

I clearly said at the time. Like I said, moving goalposts. Btw, didn't Tiger, Kobe and Michael Phelps among others lose endorsements?

Thanks that tells me everything I need to know. I suppose we'll agree to disagree on this.

what the hell is at the time? 1984-1990? 1977? 2010? You clearly gave no time period, but the nebulous "at the time," so I am sorry for moving the goal posts that are only in your head and you have not articulated to anyone in this thread.

I still dont know when. IF you are saying 1984, then no. Mary Lou Retton was the olympics star of 1984. Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Joe Montana were superstars at that time.

That was a great doc. Funniest part was when the announcer back in the day was talking about Calvin Smith "always being a bridesmaid, seldom being a bride" :heh: he knew what he was doing. But Calvin is the only cat I respect, only one who hadn't got caught doping. :obama: Other than the Brazilian cat.

For the people saying Lewis wasn't as big a star as Gretsky & co....well, that's probably true. He didn't have a U.S. based sport that aired nightly several months out of the year. But he was a monster, in the U.S. and internationally he might have been the biggest, save for one or two.

That said..I think there's no question that he was juicing. Those braces got me like :comeon:. I think Don Caitlin was basically trying to intimate that in this episode too. From his incredulous attitude to the IOC covering it up to his comments at the end regarding the tests he went back and did on those athletes and how the # of positives made him stop. Sure, the drug Lewis tested positive for is no longer on the banned list but I doubt that was the only one he was using. The fact that he was willing to take a banned substance in the first place speaks volumes.
