I read about the case a long time ago and refrain from taking one side or the other.
The prosecution did a much better job than the defense.
The prosecution started off the trial by saying in regards to her going to his hotel room at 3 am “if you make a poor decision and walk down a dangerous alley late at night, it’s still a crime if you get mugged”. I think the prosecution said that she expected to go sightseeing and took a camera with her, and Tyson tricked her by saying he left something in his hotel room and he attacked her in the bathroom. I don’t think it was used in the trial, but I know people likened it to his interviews of him talking about how he enjoyed outsmarting his victims and tricking them when he would mug them.
The defense did a terrible job. There is a myth that Tyson was defended by a tax lawyer, Charley Steiner on ESPN said this. This isn’t true. Tyson was defended by Vincent Fuller, who defended John Hinckley when he clapped Ronald Reagan with a .22. My uncle said “you get a chance to assassinate Reagan and you bring a 22?? You can’t get any help nowadays!!”
Fuller successfully defended Hinckley and insanity laws were changed as a result. That’s about as big of a success you can have as a criminal defense lawyer. But it’s agreed upon that the defense did a poor job defending Tyson. Here is an SI article in 1992 about the lousy job they did defending him.
A Damnable Defense
Tyson did a lot of inappropriate shyt, there were other incidents of him being aggressive with women. Always grabbing ass, and there was that one incident where he forcibly kissed a girl at a parking lot. When a guy tried to help the girl, Mike pimp-slapped him to the ground. So Tyson had this reputation going in....then the defense was apparently using it like “oh the dumb bytch should have known better”

There wasn’t a lot of physical evidence to this. The only evidence I remember reading about was that they said the vaginal abrasions that Desiree had were consistent with rape, but they also said it’s possible from consensual sex. Apparently, the defense tried to bring court documents showing that Mike was packing a foot long down there, and that’s what caused it. The court did not allow it.
That a$$hole Jim Gray talked about speaking with Mike when he was locked up. Tyson told him that there was no way he would ever admit to it, even if it lessened his sentence, because he was not guilty of it. But he said he got away with so many crimes in his life, that it was karma for that.
Later on, it was discovered that Desiree Washington had apparently falsely accused someone of rape in the past. She didn’t want to get in trouble at home from her dad, and claimed she got raped.
