Imagine being the employee that isn't part of the office lottery pool?

900k is a nice sum of money for investing. it's not life changing...if it's life changing to you, then congrats. we must have very different views of what life changing is.

so 1.5 million dollars in cash wouldn't be life changing to you?

no...my life would be the same next week as it is today except my student loans and mortgage would be paid off (possibly...not in a rush since my tenants cover it :yeshrug:) and i'd have more in long term investment/retirement fund. i couldn't buy the home i want out here, let alone cop multiple residences (a life dream), wipe out debt, upgrade my lifestyle, and live my ideal life with $1.5 million. that would add comfort, more so in the long term. but "life changing" - to me - is transformational. $1.5M is not that.

How are taxes in Canada? That's roughly 1.2 million after taxes each. That could work for life if they invest it, and get passive income. I'd make sure we had some kind of written agreement before I gave my $5. What if the woman didn't reveal she had the winning ticket, and had someone else claim the money?
thats how my office does it. we have a printed out paper with all of our names and the amount we contributed, date, etc

hmm, that's 1.5 US, est. losing 35-40% to taxes, 900k. Nice investment/retirement change to sit on but not life changing money. Good enough tho for just throwing a few dollars in an office pool each month tho :ehh:

It's certainly life changing money, but I get and agree with the gist of what you're saying.

It's not "Quit your job, and spend the rest of your days living the life of Riley" money.

Those are life changing things brehette :heh:

Take it from me, I've been blessed with one of them (got scholarships through undergrad and grad, so no student debt), and I look at where I am compared to my peers who graduated in the hole....the lives are unquestionably changed. That's why everyone's jumping down your throat. Not having to pay those two bills results in THOUSANDS of dollars extra in your pocket each month. Imagine how much more stuff you could buy or more investments you could make in or more money you could save (dramatically changing your retirement trajectory) with those extra funds.

(P.S. You're right about the mortgage....you could probably refi into a rate that would make it more advantageous to keep the mortgage rather than paying it off, but that's a topic for another thread)

Just move doesn't make this life changing. And Texas is not some place I want to live, so basically I got "life changing" money that sends me to a place I have no desire to live in along with having no family and friends in Texas.

Furthermore I'd be making less with the same about of bills, how is this an upgrade? Or do I spend all the money paying all my bills and for a new house in Texas which puts me back at square one - having to work everyday
