On a 2nd note... Can someone explain the prevalence of names like Nyshawn, Tyshawn, Shamel, and Tyriq (most of these guys don't claim to be Muslim) in NY being the hood names. You rarely see cats named Dequantavious and sh1t up north.

just my opinion,
history wise I don't recall folks from 1950's with a wave of names like those ...

but with the Malcolm x movement and of course 5 percent nation movement 1960's/70's. you had dudes from the 1980's they started a wave of names like Tyriek,Shamel, Ramel, etc.... . you even had a couple spanish NY born those puerto ricans naming those names too from the godbody 5% percent movement . In my opinion/observation, it became regular to name your kids those names in the hood.
