For one take out that damn music. Look at how they did the empty arena match between Rocky and Mankind. They didn't go for any craziness, no silly music to take you out of it. They played it straight and had Vince on the mic selling it. Yes it was pre recorded and yes it was a gimmick match, and yes it ended with mankind pinning the rock with a forklift, but it didn't come across as contrived or silly as this match. It didn't help that there were no stakes in the match. Like its a non title match between two people on different brands...what does Bray get if he wins? Nothing. What does Randy get if he wins? Nothing. Does it affect either one of them if they lose? Nope not at all. So the lack of stakes didn't help the silliness of it.
The matt vs jeff stuff had stakes, was a blood rivalry, had history, and of course it was played for jokes but it could do that when you have everything else there. Wrestling is basic storytelling and sometimes I wonder if these cats just know how to tell a story
