Makur Maker, a top 5 college basketball recruit, has Howard on his radar

Makur Maker to decide between going pro or enrolling in college

Top five 2020 prospect Makur Maker is gauging interest between signing with a professional league or playing college basketball once he graduates high school, he told 247Sports.

“I definitely want to see what RJ (Hampton) and LaMelo (Ball) do after this year and see how they play against these professionals,” Maker said. “It’s definitely appealing playing against grown men, although you’re playing against grown men in college too. Competition is going to be there no matter what."

“The thing about college is you play on national TV every night so you’re getting that exposure from the country and basically the world. That’s very appealing to me.”

Maker, who ranks No. 6 in the 247Sports Composite Rankings and 4th overall in the Top247, has received interest from the NBL, G League and other professional leagues, his guardian Ed Smith told 247Sports.

“It’s almost like the college, they are trying to see what we want to do,” Smith said. “Both groups will be able to recruit competitively. I think that’s important. We are watching what happens with LaMelo. Slam (Magazine) jumped on Melo and are doing something with him. So we’ll see how that marketing works."

“The thing about college is it keeps you relevant, and from my perspective it helped Zion (Williamson) a lot. He did get better, but it also helped his career standpoint. You have to keep an eye on that.”

If Maker, a 6-foot-11 versatile forward, opts to go the college route, his college options are strong.

“It’s been steady,” Maker told 247Sports. “The same schools are still recruiting me. Kentucky, Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington State.”

Maker is looking to take some college visits this fall, including potential visits to UCLA and Howard.

UCLA is one we will keep an eye one because they are in our backyard,” Smith said. “We just have to see their style of play and if it fits for where he’s headed and where he’s trending because they are right here in our backyard."

“I spoke with coach Kenny Blakeney and he was telling me I have a good opportunity to come in there and win, play day one and work on my skill set,” Maker added about the first year head coach at Howard.

@Nerdy black guy What are we supposed to take away from this?
That a HBCU that has never had a chance of getting a four star prospect let alone a five star prospect is in strong contention for a top 10 player ( currently 6th) and this could eventually lead to the start of something good/great.

Maker on has two campus vists set up. One with UCLA and one with Howard.

Who would turn down UCLA for Howard though......

It's still a tough sell.

I believe the kid should go to Howard though....

But realistically UCLA has all the bells and whistles to help train, condition and keep athletes prior to reaching the league...

This is the problem. Like I said in another thread. I like the idea but until HBCUs have access to the same resources as PWIs, kids are putting themselves at a huge disadvantage.

I think guys like Darius Bazley, Mitchell Robinson, LaMelo Ball, R.J. Hampton are proving college ball is irrelevant

Makur wouldn’t miss anything if he just took a year off and just trained with his cousin lol so why not go to an HBCU?

The only perks of playing for UCLA is being in Los Angeles, having a year of the college boy lifestyle, playing for a historic program, the facilities, national coverage being on ESPN, getting paid under the table shyt like that.
