I think the main purpose is cool, to give awards for the best video.
But that show has nothing to do with giving awards for the best videos anymore, it's to promote the artists the labels put most money behind. It's been that way for years now.
The artists MTV, pop radio etc put their bets on. And also a celebration of the pop artist of the year, Beyonce this year and JT last year..

All of these reasons are legit....and the fact that the music video doesnt matter anymore. I can't imagine young ppl are watching MTV and BET anymore for videos...they just hit YouTube. There's no waiting to see if they're gonna show it, or if it's on a countdown.

Lorde winning Best Rock and Drake winning Best Rap for an R&B song prove these awards mean nothing. Just a way for MTV to feel like they still have credibility in music. Even though they don't play music videos anymore.

Last VMA i personally cared about was about 1999/2000 and possibly 2001/2002 too.

But the only reason i watch award shows outside of it being an event is the performances. Never gave a fukk about the actual awards. Whether it's Source Awards, BET Awards, Grammy Awards, MTV awards..it's a business & about ratings & camera time & sponsors yada yada..yet people knowing this still get so argumentative over awards like it means much.

It's like fans just want someone to validate their opinion on music whether it's girls/guys, friends, sales, awards etc.

time for someone to come up with something new to capture peoples attention and interests cuz its alot of the same shyt over and over again. nicki minaj tryin to outdo lil kim, miley cyrus trying to outdo madonna and brittney, too many gimmick rappers, etc.

we need a hip hop awards show with a 3 round celebrity boxing match, performances, battles where rappers are randomly pitted against each other, and we need to have ALL hip hop heads in attendence from the lil boosies to the mgk/macklemore hipsters to the slaughterhouse/more lyrical hippity hoppity rappity rappers

But that's also due to less production costs as the ratings gone done & the market change. As for artists, its all opinons. U & i might not like art*tst A, B & C, but alot of people didnt enjoy some art*ts u & i enjoyed before too. So thats all opinions.
