5 years later Freddie Gibbs is still bytchin about losing The Grammy to Nas, like he’s not the most overrated rapper of his class.

most overrated rapper of his era tired of talking about him...yes hes good. not great. production has always carried

Gibbs was dope 16-17 years ago when he was doing tapes with DJ Skee and had weak production.

Scarface said it best recently, Freddie is "underrated because he's not running around leaning on crews and affiliations to pop. But his music is undeniable". Easily one of the best artists to heat up over the past decade. The catalogue speaks for itself.

This right here.

Gibbs definitely reminds a lot of these dudes on here of a n*gga that must've took their chick or some sh*t. They seem to get more and more mad, the more successful he gets. Bro's albums are too critically acclaimed for them. They're really mad at him now.

I'll give Gibbs credit for understanding how to craft a project better than his peers. And he certainly has more seminal albums/projects than any of those guys too (Griselda, mainly). But I also think he's regressing as a rapper and relying too much on his flow. I remember Young Guru saying something about coaching rappers to avoid using the same words too many times in a verse and man does Gibbs need to hear that. How many verses are interal rhymes with each line ending with "shyt" or "nikka." Over and over across multiple tracks on his albums. The flow and beats can get me to overlook it but after years of this stuff....ehhh.

Don't get me wrong. Alfredo II is really good. I actually was listening to it again this weekend due to this thread. And I get how we sound like haters but you gotta admit it's been like 4 years of insufferable headlines and leaks about this guy.

You're definitely overthinking it.

It's music. Flow-wise and lyrically, dude is literally in his prime. This last album highlights that clearly. His ear for beats is still top-tier. And he's able to drop albums repeatedly that are critically-acclaimed and always in the conversation for AOTY.

I'm into the music. I don’t pay attention to headlines and gossip. That's not my thing. What I'm looking for is some dope ass music and consistency. Gibbs ain't let me down yet. And I've been f*cking with his music since '07-'08. Every project this dude has dropped has been quality. That's what I'm looking for.

2020 was one of the best years for rap music in the past decade. Everyone was dropping albums because of Covid. They couldn't tour so they had to actually release music. 2020 was a goated year for music.
The bigger names didn't drop. The artist that would normally get nominated. That's why Gibbs hasn't been back nominated since and he won't be. He got in off the strength of it being a strange year. He should be grateful for the nomination.

Not even nominating either Stillmatic or Gods Son for Best Rap Album was EGREGIOUS.

He also deserved to win for Life Is Good over Take Care.
So only LIG then.

Although I thought Undun was the by far best album that year. I can’t deny that the biggest rapper, dropping the most popular album, hailed a classic by millions and an era defining album winning. Very few people who aren’t super Nas fans would put it over Take care.

So in realistic terms. No album then.

Gibbs is mostly loved by Cacs. I can't get jiggy with his shyt. He's a funny character though and should think about a career in stand-up. His music is not for me.

So, Nas didn't deserve to win in 2013 because Take Care was a much bigger album with massive hits (which I understand), and he also didn't deserve to win in 2021 because Alfredo was a better album than KD, despite Nas being a much bigger name? Why change the rules depending on what year he was nominated?

He actually has a somewhat fair chance of being nominated this year. There’s usually one underground rap album that makes it in amongst the bigger releases and as a previous nominee Gibbs has the name recognition, as does Alchemist, to get in again.

The absolute locks for Best Rap Album nominations are GNX and Let God Sort Em Out.

Then you’ve got Chromakopia as a good bet and maybe Playboi Carti’s Music as the super commercial pick. Alfredo 2 could easily slide in the fifth slot as the underground pick.

Life Is Good was more acclaimed than Take Care so there weren’t “very few” people putting it over Take Care. In real time it was LIG that was hailed as the classic, not Take Care.

NY all day..Da Stead & BK..
Dude just comes off as empty. Emotionally, intellectually, morally, etc. Alfredo II is dope but man...shame that a rapper I used to genuinely fukk with and find interesting/funny is now just a fukking loser. Maybe he was always loser, tbh.
I told nikkas he been a bytch. Since the Jeezy shyt. Son was just disrespecting Doom right before Doom died. Son is a piece of shyt and completely unlikable.

I'm thinking The FORCE gets nominated. It would be a shame if it didn't, but I don't know if LL even submitted it.

He legit seems like a weirdo personality type. It’s crazy because he’s hilarious but also a fukking bytch. With great music. The dualities :patrice:
