Rich folk drive up the cost of living, and eventually leave when those cities/states want to raise taxes.
Texas and Florida will eventually fell the pinch once they start raising sales tax.

The rest of the state is red because the other major NY state cities (Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse) are rust belt cities that have been steadily losing population for decades since the factory jobs left.
Buffalo only lost about 2% in the last decade and has had a huge renovation and cultural renaissance. The hope is it can see positive growth in the next few decades.
