I made a spreadsheet in Excel that helps you play with the numbers to save even more. Instead of doing an increment of $1 a week like this table you can try $3 or any other number to estimate how much you'd have to put away each week/month/quarter.

I did an increment of $3 last year and saved quite a bit after 8 months. Let me know if you guys want a copy

I like forcing myself to save, so a portion of my check goes into several accounts. 10% goes to 401k, 40% goes to savings, 50% to checkings. So that 10% to 401k i can't touch. The 40% to savings I would place in other investment accounts like stocks or my emergency savings. the 50% checking covers rent and expenses with leftovers going back to the savings.
