Given his history with the company, his general track record in the business, and his various troubles outside of it, there’s been a lot of curiosity around how WWE will handle Alberto El Patron (fka Del Rio) now that it’s acquired control of AAA, the promotion for which El Patron currently wrestles.
That’s why there’s been so much interest in the Mega championship match that AAA booked — after the WWE deal was announced — for their show this Saturday (May 31) in Mexico City. El Patron currently holds that belt, the top title in AAA. He’ll defend this weekend against El Hijo del Vikingo, who has essentially been featured on WWE programming over the last few weeks as the face of AAA... including last night (May 26) on Raw.
That was before Vikingo got involved in one of the night’s Money in the Bank qualifiers, kicking Chad Gable in the head shortly before he was pinned by Penta. And the graphic in that tweeted image wasn’t Raw’s only mention of Vikingo’s match against Chad Gable next Saturday at Worlds Collide.
Another graphic that was shown during the broadcast listed the match as being for the Mega championship.
The likely assumption is that, as many had already surmised, Vikingo is beating El Patron for the belt this weekend.
If the graphic is the SPOILER its being taken for, does that mean the door is closed for Alberto to return to WWE programming? Could it mean he’s on his way out at AAA altogether with WWE in control?
It’s an outcome many have guessed at ahead of Worlds Collide and the finalization of WWE’s acquisition of the lucha libre promotion.
