I got caught lackin with a sudden job opportunity with a half decade old resume

shyt caught me so off guard, I had a teacher offer me a position out of no where...

Teacher: Just shoot me your resume and we should be in talks for this position soon

Me: Uhhhh okay! *quickly updates resume I had from high school that looks like it was done in word 2004.* This should be good right doc!

Teacher: .........

And before you ask, reason I haven't updated my shyt in so long is because I am just plain irresponsible

I've worked at the same shytty retail store for almost 4 years and it never dawned on me to update it

But I'm hungry now, teacher sent me a nice template to update my shyt. Getting more and more offers in my field. Getting my degree in the fall. shyts about to get real

Yes. For free when I was laid off from a job, and it changed my life!! I’m scheduling some time with her soon because I want more managerial/senior roles. Gonna run me about $800 including a linked in profile, but I feel she’s worth every dime.

Most people just find something online and copy and paste and you end up with a resume full of shyt you didn’t actually do. She has a detailed conversation with you, makes you fill out a questionnaire, and really gets insight in your work duties. Then she “fancies” that shyt up.

Yeah im mid career so im not competing more against people with 2-3x my experience so this makes things really tough now.

If you want her information, please let me know. Like I said, she’s EXPENSIVE, but worth it. If not her, i would certainly advise to get a professional. Someone not only good with wording but format too.

I have to imagine there's marginal returns to having a professional do your resume. Like how much more much better can an $800 engagement be vs a $50 engagement. I can imagine if you're resume is in tatters then it'd help. But if you've been around the career block a few times then there can only be so much help offered. Right?

If I'm wrong, then I may look to getting a professional do my resume, but having worked in my college's career center, I'm pretty privy as to what works for a lot of companies

I can imagine if you're resume is in tatters then it'd help. But if you've been around the career block a few times then there can only be so much help offered. Right?

I think if you sit down for a couple of hours you can create a nicely formatted resume from scratch. I'm talking about going from just plain text to something with visual appeal that is also ATS friendly. About another hour of iteration could get you the proper content. I did this for the previous format I used, back in college, and a recruiter at a career fair asked if I had it professionally done. So as long as you can pull up a good few reference resumes, you can get your own thing going without much effort.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but for my $800, my target salary will increase $25k+. The way she will be able to market me on paper and via linked in, is worth it to me and she can do a better job than I can. Like I said, she’s not just stealing things from other resumes, she’s using your experience, and wording it in a way that takes you from a janitor to a senior sanitation engineer. That’s not a skill everyone has. With that said, if I didn’t have prior experience with her, I would be skeptical too.

I could, it doesn’t mean it will be the best effort for what I want to accomplish overall. Just like like paying for a contractor or mechanic, some things i would rather leave to a proven professional. I definitely feel she’s worth my money, but again I understand why people aren’t with it. I need mid 6 figures.

I think as you get older this becomes more important, especially if you want to move into management. For me, that looking for my next job post entry level, there are only so many ways you can market your experience.

Very true. On my college resume I had it down that I had led some teams and had a few years of programming under my belt. Every recruiting email was about a senior position looking for 7+ years of experience.
