BBM Trash? Really that shyt is some beautiful music breh. The Weeknd is dope as fk, but BBH i head and shoulders above all. Dude had the charts on LOCK. Dudes hate the fact that he had to adjust his music mainstream I mean breh had to make some money. It's not like the whole album still isn't about drugs and fkin bytches, while still being radio friendly which is crazy. Tell Your Friends is my shyt that joint goes one of many classics on the album.
House of Balloons is a great project and still sounds great today, but I think it's been diminishing returns for him since. I think a lot of that is down to Doc MCKinney and Illangelo being absent or less prominent in later projects. Illangelo did a lot of BBTM but that album is trash pandering to the mainstream.
Kiss Land wasn't good but at least it was trying something a little different. I knew he was done after I saw a Rolling Stone interview with him before the release of BBTM and he said he would do anything to be the biggest star in the world.
EDIT: Also his subject matter and shtick is quite tired by now. There's only so many ways you can say you're getting faded with hoes.

Weeknd was always watered down subject matter perfect for mainstream. His sound was Drake-ish, just a colder and slightly edgier version
Same with A$AP tbh and I like both artists.

Don't get me wrong when HoB dropped it was amazing and genuinely offering something a bit different in R&B music. It's probably been a mixture of the huge amount of similar material coming out since and Abel's lack of artistic growth since then that has diluted the subject matter.

ASAP Rocky as a whole has always been more underground/eclectic/weirder than Weeknd.
Rocky's content is fairly generic. Probably the only semi-mainstream thing about him.

The Weknd is done, he signed to a major label so his music can't be as left field and experimental as it use to be. He can't even explore any real songwriting because his music has be littered with hooks, you heard that I can't feel my face bullshyt? fukking song repeats the chorus like 6 times, before the song is over, fukk that. He probably knew he was going to sell out eventually so decided to release real music before he was tied under a contract which is why we got 3 classic mixtape in a years time

Sad thing is he didn't have to. He could have been like the alt R&B version of Tec where he eschews major labels and is still popular as fukk. But I guess that whole dark, druggy depressive persona was just a front to gain fame
