but even then L.A.'s life was cut short and he never had a chance to really grow into an even better artist

I think Bibby became too polished for Capone and Herb is a better lyricist than both. LA Capone was mad diverse wit the flows tho and who knows what he coulda been if he was still living and growing as an artist...don't know if he would've blew past them but it's possible cause his style fits and adjusts to different songs..I agree with everything else u said..
