A sixth person has died days after a major crash in Terrell that officials say was caused by a semitruck driver who fell asleep at the wheel.
Sgt. Kyle Bradford, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, announced the additional death Monday afternoon.
The victims have not yet been publicly identified.
According to Bradford, the crash occurred about 2:40 p.m. Saturday when the semitruck driver, 27-year-old Alexis Osmani Gonzalez-Companioni, fell asleep while driving.
The 18-wheeler Gonzalez-Companioni was driving collided with a Ford F-150 carrying five people, then pushed into two other semitrucks, Bradford said. One of the trucks jackknifed, hitting a Jeep Compass, a Ford Mustang and a Honda passenger vehicle, he said.
All but one of the passengers in the Ford F-150 died on scene, Bradford said.
The survivor, who was taken via CareFlite medical helicopter to a Dallas hospital with life-threatening injuries, later died, marking the sixth fatality.
The driver of the Jeep also died, Bradford said.
The crash involved a total of seven vehicles, including the three 18-wheelers and four passenger vehicles, according to the Terrell Volunteer Fire Department.
Gonzalez-Companioni, who remained in custody Monday at a Kaufman County jail, faces five counts of manslaughter and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, with bail set at $1.5 million.
