I'm late to the game, had a 7.1 HD receiver for a few years now and just recently added the extra speakers in the rear for the full effect. Damn, now I'm all about 7.1 BD's and PS3 games. Watching Oblivion and when he lands his plane in the stadium it sounds like it is about to land in the living room. 5.1 is cool, but 7.1 is where it's at. Anybody made the jump from 5.1 to 7.1? Working on running a full Energy Speaker setup.

Still on that 5.1 game since '02. Even upgraded the receiver a couple year ago to a Pioneer with True HD surround, but still kept it 5.1.

I have nowhere for them side speakers to go :yeshrug:

I struggled with that at the last place I lived (for the rear speakers), hated it. Just recently moved, measured the living room before anything was moved in the place, ordered 100ft of 16ga wire, wire clips, and 2 extra surround speakers.

Might have to pick it up, over on blu-ray.com checking out all the 7.1 titles, hitting up Amazon and Ebay. PS3 had me blown away with effects all around you depending on the game.

Yeah, I've had them for a while. Only just recently formatted my place to somewhat better suit them though (got the rear and side wires hidden underneath the carpet. I just wish I had the right wall structure for the side speakers. Right now, one of them is on my dvd/blu ray stand in a place that looks rather odd, but fukk it.

Still sitting on 5.1, not even sure I've got the space for the additional speakers. Isn't 7.2 a thing now or am I making that up completely?

I have 5.1 in both my living room and Home theatre. My shyt is loud and dynamic enough, not sure what the benefit of two extra speaker are. Instead of spending money on more shyt speakers, its far better to spend money on QUALITY speakers. One quality speaker will sound better than 7 shyt ones.

I'm personally partial to Focale. Its in my home and car.

The new HD receivers are doing 7.2, basically giving you option of a left and right subwoofer. The content is still 7.1 although a 7.2 receiver can "matrix" a left & right sub effect if you have the setup.

The extra speakers work as the surround back or front height to add to the effect if the movie/game supports it. Before I added the back speakers I had the option to bi-amp the front speakers with the extra channels, no complaints at all about sound quality. I remember Focal speakers, quality brand, I installed a few when I did audio sales and install years back. I have Boston Acoustic Pro's in the car, partial to Energy in the home, although if $$ wasn't an issue I would have Paradigm in the home.

A real good sound system can run like 2gs with all the right equipment I have a 5.1 Sony all in one system but 7.1 would be overkill in my current place and seems like a nightmare wire wise unless I over paid a home theater place to set it up for me and make it pretty but won't do that until I get a good 4k projector and dedicated home theater in the basement
