Whether he was in there with Austin, Taker, Kane, HBK, Rock, or whoever I could never see Shamrock as an underdog. I actually thought dude was going to beat Taker at Backlash 99.

The WWE did a great job of handling Shamrock in the sense that most of his losses/low points were a direct result of fukkery or his own loss of focus due to losing his temper.
He was literally his own worst enemy.
Also, though he lost, he was handing Taker his ass in a fashion rarely seen in that Backlash match.

this was a cool gimmick match at the time. it wouldn't work today because the UFC/MMA is so big now, but back then in 1998 it was a very small niche sport that was only seen on PPV. that's why this worked.
