Just venting really. I’m pulling the plug. I spent 6 years in the military. Cyber security field but it’s time to end this. 2020-2021 will be my last year in this and I’m so excited.

I have 7 years, half a bachelors in cyber security, and security +. Might aim to either finish my degree or get another cert. ya boy tryna hit six figures... fr.

How do I get a security clearance?

You will VERY EASILY get a job.

The federal government doesn’t require a degree; it prefers experience, it actually requires experience regardless of education. You’ll receive 5 preference points for being a Veteran. File for Veteran Affairs (VA) Health benefits; and you can receive a rating for any service connected injuries, it just has to be documented and/or proven to be service connected. Along with monetary compensation from the VA, you’ll receive 10 preference point for Federal Jobs.

Federal Cyber Security positions are readily available and most are direct hire (circumvention most HR processes)

You’ll have to build up to a six figure federal government position, but you will not be struggling, especially if you receive a decent rating from the VA for your service connected injuries.

You can also easily work in the private sector, especially if you have or had a security clearance. Not only do they love veterans (our work ethic) they get tax credits for hiring veterans.

...and use the Post 9/11 GI Bill wisely to finish your degree. I was a full-time hybrid student completing my degree, which the VA pays 100% for school and Cost of Living Expenses in relationship to your college’s location. I was collecting over $2,500 COLA for the National Capitol Region (DMV).

I cannot stress this enough; Go to sick call (medical) whenever you sustain an injury, big or small; Get it documented!

You have a great future ahead of you.

Honestly thank you very much. Hearing this was dope and gave me a good boost on getting the hell out of here.

My friends, people I work with, as well as many others are tryna scare the hell out of me into staying in. I’m not going for it. Nothing at this point is worth it. Not the pension, the medical care, the pay, the deployments, the comradely, nothing. I just want better. More money and freedom.

I’m going to get my VA done ASAP. Right now I got my whole left leg lol but more to come. Again thanks. REP!

Update: I decided I want to invest in the security analyst field. I got a plan for the certs I'm going to try to achieve in this order.

CCNA Routing and Switching
CCNA Cyber Security
GIAC Certified Incident Handler
GIAC Penetration Tester
OCSP Certification

Lot of studying ahead but I'll get it done.

I’m rooting for you. I’m in a similar boat, 5 years in the military but I’m leaving to do the entrepreneurial thing.

I can’t speak on the cyber security thing but I know others on here are in that space.

But I do have a plug on the disability. A guy who was the regional directorial out in Atlanta and now runs a nonprofit in Norfolk. I only had 3 things initially but he gave me 15 more to file for. He’s been getting ppl 80-100%

Yea he got me right, I’m still on active duty.

The VA has a program called the BDD (Benefits Delivery at Discharge) which is a fancy way of saying if you apply within 90-180 days of your ETS date they’ll have a percentage for you, and you should start getting that money they day you get off active duty

Sounds like you want to go the pentesting route. If you don't mind me asking, why the CCNA Cyber OPs(assuming that what you mean) and Certified Incident Handler certs?

As for the CCNA certification it’s a good beginner certification really. I’m looking for that middle ground certification between CompTIA security+ and the GIAC. I might swap it with the CompTIA CYSA+ honestly. I can see that certification being worth something soon.

As far as the Incident handler, I’m just following the roadmap (and I can get it for free).
