Jake Paul-Nate Diaz boxing match set for Aug. 5 in Dallas

By Marc Raimondi

Two of the biggest personalities in combat sports will clash this summer.

YouTuber-turned-prizefighter Jake Paul and former UFC bad boy Nate Diaz will compete in a boxing match Aug. 5 at American Airlines Center in Dallas, officials told ESPN on Wednesday. The bout will be contested at 185 pounds and is contracted for eight rounds with 10-ounce gloves. The pay-per-view bout will be distributed globally by DAZN.

The event will be a 50-50 collaboration between Paul's Most Valuable Promotions and Diaz's Real Fight Inc. It will be the first time Diaz has ever promoted himself, the first time he will fight outside the UFC in 15 years and his first career pro boxing match. Diaz has competed in some of the biggest pay-per-view events in UFC history, and Paul has made a name for himself as a boxing draw despite his experience level.

Diaz and Paul have exchanged trash talk on social media and in interviews over the past 18 months. In October, during a boxing event headlined by Paul and UFC legend Anderson Silva, Diaz's team and Paul's team got into an altercation backstage. And Paul challenged Diaz in his postfight interview after defeating Silva.

Diaz has typically fought in MMA at 155 pounds and more recently at 170 pounds. Paul has fought as heavy as 191.5 pounds as a pro. He weighed in at 183.6 pounds for Fury.

Paul (6-1) lost his first career boxing match in his last bout to Tommy Fury, the brother of heavyweight great Tyson, back in February via split decision. The Ohio native, who trains out of Puerto Rico, is undefeated against MMA fighters, including Silva, Tyron Woodley and Ben Askren; he beat the latter two by knockout. Paul, 26, has only been a pro since 2020.

"My last fight didn't end the way I wanted, but the result was the best thing that could have happened to my professional boxing aspirations," Paul said in a statement. "Now, the world thinks I am vulnerable, when all I am is more focused than ever. My team wanted me to take an easy fight like KSI next, but that's not how I am built. Nate Diaz is considered one of the most bad-ass fighters of all time, but he and his team have been running their mouths for too long."

Diaz (21-13) fought out his UFC contract with a submission win over Tony Ferguson at UFC 279 in September. The Stockton, California, native handed Conor McGregor his first UFC loss back in 2016. Diaz, 37, has headlined 10 UFC events and won The Ultimate Fighter 5 tournament in 2007. He's one of the most popular fighters in MMA history and is a former sparring partner of top boxer Andre Ward.

"Besides Canelo, he's the biggest thang in boxing," Diaz said in a statement. "I'm here to conquer that. I'm the King of combat sports and then I'm headed back to get my UFC belts. I f---ed up Conor for acting out and now here I am again, like a Super Hero of the Real Fight game, the King of the Real Fight game."

Diaz has made it known that he plans on returning to the UFC in the future with a McGregor trilogy fight still on the table down the road. Paul, meanwhile, had talked about a Tommy Fury rematch next or the aforementioned bout with fellow YouTube star KSI. But Paul vs. Diaz was too big of a matchup to pass up.

"Jake's star power and popularity continue to command massive audiences worldwide," Most Valuable Promotions co-founder Nakisa Bidarian said in a statement. "His most recent bout, Paul vs. Fury, surpassed more than 800,000 pay-per-view purchases and was a commercial success for all our partners. Jake remains one of the most avidly followed fighters in the sport and all eyes are on him, wondering what's next. Well, what's next is one of the most vicious men ever in the cage."

No other fights have been announced for the event, though given the bad blood between the two teams it wouldn't be surprising to see Paul and Diaz teammates on the undercard.

"Nate's departure from the UFC made him the most sought-after free agent in combat sports history with all eyes looking to see what his next move would be," Real Fight Inc. president Zach Rosenfield said in a statement. "In choosing to make his boxing debut against Jake Paul, Nate found an opponent where there is an organic, non-scripted backstory that motivates him and will clearly capture the excitement of audiences throughout the world."

Amanda Serrano Very Focused in Camp, Feels Ready For War With Hardy

Carolina, Puerto Rico – The undisputed 126-pound world champion Amanda Serrano is training at full steam in her native Puerto Rico, with a view to her fight on Saturday, August 5 in the city of Dallas, Texas.
Serrano (44-2-1, 30 KOs) will defend the WBO, IBF, WBC, WBA titles against Heather Hardy (24-2, 4 KOs) in a rematch that will take place at the American Airlines Center.
The main event will feature Youtube star turned boxer Jake Paul taking on MMA veteran Nate Díaz, as a pay-per-view card being streamed by DAZN.
“I have been training very hard in Puerto Rico. I made a small gym in the canopy of my house. I am without distractions, very focused as we are in all of my fights and I feel right now, a month from the fight, ready for war against Heather Hardy," said Serrano.
“Hardy was the first female boxer to give me the opportunity to start my journey to being the undisputed 126-pound champion. We met in New York in January 2019, and it was 10 interesting rounds. She was able to survive a dominant first round from me, but she was able to adjust and show why she is world class. I remember that we were not the headline fight, but we had the attention. Small steps to give the legacy that women's boxing deserves.
"A sellout is expected before a euphoric crowd in Dallas and God willing, we will continue to show that women's boxing is a vital part of a card of this magnitude."
Jordan Maldonado, Serrano's trainer and manager indicated, “Amanda always trains with her heart 100 percent. She's ready to fight 15 rounds if they let her. Being the undisputed champion has motivated her to train as if she were the challenger.
"Puerto Rico is very important to Amanda and if everything goes well we will soon announce something that will make the island very happy."

Shadasia Green vs. Olivia Curry Lands on Paul-Diaz Pay-Per-View Card

Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) and Real Fight Inc. (RFI) announced that two super middleweight contenders, Shadasia “The Sweet Terminator Green” (12-0, 11 KOs) and Olivia Curry (7-1, 2 KOs) will be joining the Jake Paul vs. Nate Diaz pay-per-view card live on August 5th. The 10-round matchup will be contested at 168 Ibs at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, TX.
Green comes to the ring off her latest dominating victory, a 6th round TKO, over former unified world champion, Elin Cederroos, back in February.
Curry, who boasts a decisive five-bout winning streak, will put her skill to the test as she steps in against the powerful Green.
Rounding out the card will be Real Fight, Inc.’s Alan Sanchez (22-5-1, 10 KOs) vs. Angel Beltran Villa (17-1, 10 KOs) as they go head-to-head in an 8-round welterweight bout.
Green, the former Team USA star who boasts an impressive 12-0 record with 11 KO’s and the record for fastest KO in a women’s fight, joined MVP after a trailblazing few years in the sport.
She is currently the mandatory challenger for Undisputed champion Savannah Marshall’s newly earned WBC, WBO, WBA and IBF belts.
As a former standout college basketball star, Green spent years as a starter for Old Dominion University (ODU) where she was impressively named Third Team All-CAA and ranked top 20 in the CAA in scoring. The Paterson, NJ native later broke out into the amateur boxing scene when she joined the U.S. National Team as a heavyweight after just five fights, earning a silver medal at the 2016 World Championships in Kazakhstan.
In 2019, Green transitioned to professional boxing where she quickly gained notoriety as a top female contender, ranking #1 in the WBC and IBO, and #2 in the WBA, ultimately earning her the Paterson Laila Ali Award.
“I’m at the top of my game right now,” said Shadasia Green. “I may be next in line for the super middleweight title, but right now, I’m strictly focused on knocking out Olivia Curry. The August 5th card boasts an impressive lineup of fights and it's an honor to share center stage with female boxing legends like Amanda Serrano and Heather Hardy. I can’t wait to show fans in Dallas and at home exactly why they call me ‘The Sweet Terminator.’”
Curry, the professional boxer out of Chicago, originally hailing from Cincinnati, OH, comes to the ring after winning her last five fights. The 33-year-old began her amateur fighting career in Muay Thai, winning the TBA Classic and fighting the best Class A competition in North America. As an amateur boxer, she won the Chicago Golden Gloves and went on to represent Chicago at the National Golden Gloves three times. Curry was nationally ranked as an elite female and competed at the 2018 USA National Tournament. As a pro, she is ranked in the top 5 middleweight contenders by major sanctioning bodies and The Ring Magazine. Outside the ring, Curry is a commercial filmmaker. She is managed by Trinidad Garcia and Rick Ramos.
“I’m grateful to MVP and Real Fight, Inc. for the opportunity to fight Shadasia and introduce myself to the world with a bang,” said Olivia Curry. “I’m coming to Dallas to win. I want to show that women’s boxing at the higher, more dangerous weight classes is leveling up.”

Is it me or I haven't heard any hype or promotion for this fight at all? I completely forgot that Paul/Diaz were going to fight. I had no idea that its 2 weeks away and I haven't seen any promotion for it which is atypical for Paul. Is the hype for Jake Paul Boxing over?

Jake Paul vs. Nate Diaz: Deal Reached To Offer PPV Event on ESPN+

Published Mon Jul 31, 2023, 02:10 PM EDT
DAZN and Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) have announced an arrangement with ESPN and Top Rank, which will see the fight between Jake Paul and Nate Diaz available for purchase on ESPN+ PPV in the United States, in addition to DAZN PPV.
The Paul vs. Diaz showdown will take place on Saturday, August 5, live at 8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. PT at the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas.
ESPN+ subscribers can purchase the $59.99 PPV here, separate streaming subscription required.
"We are excited to offer fans this one-of-a-kind combat sports event on ESPN+ PPV, which is the result of incredible collaboration between ESPN, DAZN, MVP and Top Rank," said Matt Kenny, vice president of programming and acquisitions at ESPN. "We look forward to a great event on August 5."
Over the last 18 months, Paul and Diaz have traded scathing public jabs about a potential fight. Paul (6-1, 4KO's) will be out for revenge as he prepares for his first fight since his split-decision defeat against Tommy Fury. The Cleveland native is promising to silence the critics with a spectacular KO against the combat sport icon.
Diaz, who makes his boxing debut, regularly sparred undefeated Hall of Fame boxer Andre Ward during his career. Diaz has won 22-fights as a pro, including devastating Conor McGregor with a 1-2 that lead to the Irishman's first loss in the UFC.
"This arrangement demonstrates DAZN's, MVP's, ESPN's and Top Rank's commitment to bring the fragmented combat PPV market together to deliver one of the biggest PPV events of the year to fight fans on August 5," said Joseph Markowski, CEO North America, DAZN Group.
"DAZN is committed to bringing the biggest and best fights to the widest possible audience. We will work with all broadcasters, platforms and promotional companies to deliver the most entertaining and anticipated matchups."
