Yet when used in context, describes a specific gun, namely the ar - 15, what looks like what was used here.
AKs are ARS, yet again a SPECIFIC type, and it's duly noted because the AR and AK, are two totally DIFFERENT RIFLES.
That's why in the news, if it's not a AK 47, which is a commonly know gun used in other parts of the known world, would be described as an ar 15 type gun.
