You remembered the part about the battle for the name correctly. This comes up on here every so often.
I've heard/read Bomb Squad or PE made YBT and Leaders of the New School battle for who got the names. And that PE was looking for a non-black political hip-hop act to get behind that could speak to whites or Latinos. Maybe I'm misremembering lol
Yup over here we had shows like NY Hot Tracks and Video Music Box when you had to switch the nob on the TV to UHF. We had cable kinda early in my house (around 85ish). But we had it illegally in the beginning so that don't count lolYeah, and there were always video shows that came on 'regular' channels as well... I didn't have cable in my house til like '92 but there were always video shows that aired. After videos became mega popular thru MTV in the early-80s, everybody had a syndicated video show poppin' up, even if it was just the local stations.
Carlos de JesusYup over here we had shows like NY Hot Tracks
You're lying, right?![]()
Remember these cats ?@ the first dude rapping, looking like Ron Swanson

Anyone seen this back in the days?
I'm also under that assumption.I could have sworn this was on Video Music Box.
So he gave the white kids, 'Young Black Teenagers' as a joke?Apparently Chuck D was getting 2 groups together. One would be named Young Black Teenagers, the other Leaders of the New School. Both groups wanted to be called LONS. so they had to battle, or make a song or something, and whoever won got the name.

that's my era and I NEVER heard/saw thatOn the low, and people have tried to bury this under the rug.....there was a more blatant violation that occurred around the same time. Only dudes over a certain age will remember, but for the younger guys.....a lot of golden era artists took the check and turned the other way when ANOTHER white act came down the pike.
Founder of Nike, Phil Knight, had a wannabe son who tried to be a rapper. A straight clown, but they opened that checkbook and some respected artists worked on the project/cosigned him. (others ghostwrote)
Hate to do it, but since YBT thread opened the pandora's box...i gotta do it.
