Pac basically came out to a huge welcome and made him even bigger .... controversy due to what was going on in his personal life then when California love with Dre came out it was a wrap ...
I agree, the real difference is that back then, these people got called out, and weren't allowed to linger around and have careers.I'd say this about Yo! and MTV Jams, but Rap City not so much. Rap City (pre-Basement) was playing pretty much anything that was out there, sometimes to a fault
One of the biggest misconceptions is that "back then you had to have lyrical skills/be original to get signed" and shyt along those lines. There was a LOT of wack/subpar nikkas out there. Not only did you not need skills/originality to get signed, you didn't need it to make a hit or get airplay either. There was a fair share of gimmickry, biting, and mediocrity. We don't celebrate any of those MFs today (OR then), but if you were there, you know they existed.
I always say there's a reason why songs like "I Used To Love HER", "Paparazzi", "Time's Up", "Come Clean", etc. existed... they were all more or less commentaries on the wack shyt that was going on in hip-hop. It wasn't just ALL dope shyt ALL the time as folks would like to believe.

No Limit definitely had some talent but the music overall was wack and they lacked star power. Props to P tho for pulling off the biggest hustle ever becuz most of that roster didn’t even deserve a deal. The best move they ever made was signing Snoop and that goes both ways

Das pretty much dropped the gimmick after the first album. They did it a little on the second album but not so much. And it was pretty much gone by the third and forth.
