Yeah, the Nas/Illmatic thing was kinda..... retroactive, in a way?
But not like Hov! That's NOT what I'm saying!
Illmatic came out and got MASSIVE acclaim from the critics and other rappers. That "2nd Coming of Rakim" stuff started EARLY. Rappers were giving interviews talking about they were thinking about scrapping whole albums and starting over.
But it didn't have fans like that. Don't believe me? Think about how many people know Halftime was the first single. not It Ain't Hard To Tell
Between Illmatic and IWW, though, Nas was showing up on folks albums and stabbing their tracks to death. Those high profile guest appearances and respect from everyone but the public is what made people pay attention, far more than the 5 mics.
Public at large went back and listened before IWW dropped and was like "oh shyt it's worthy of them mics!"
alot of good takes and alot of terrible ones
the terrible ones are coming from fringe level opinions based on what the person experienced
dude was right ... aint no nikka was dope but money aint a thang popped off huge ... I used to stop everything to watch the video
you can say before if you listened but that doesnt mean the whole world was listening heavy like that
proof is 2pac dissing Jay-z and nobody knowing him or caring
or Biggie mentoring him and him still not mattering until after Big died
yeah in hindsight Jay was killing, but he wasnt at a big level like that
same with the Mobb Deep Nas thing... yeah you can refute Mobb Deep blew bigger first, but they stayed regional
when Nas really blew up it was across the nation ... so the argument blurs once you explain what you really mean by starting to bubble
people are acting like because they heard mobb deep beforehand, the rest of the country gave a fukk
you can look at Nipsey Hustle (RIP) the same way ... you can say he's a star now that he's deceased and shyt
but outside of regional nobody was really caring much.... Big L too, the average rap fan still doesnt know Big L ... its not like you can debate him popping when he never really got a chance to
technically both were killing, but realistically they were both on the verge of really crossing over and blowing up nationally
use Mystikal as an example... he actually blew and ran with it while he could. Neither of the other two were at that level yet with International radio play or hourly video placement
they played Money aint a thang every 30 minutes to an hour... they didnt play Aint No nikka like that... maybe one time a day if you were lucky
all you have to do is look at the sales numbers to see the change
Outkast killed but didnt completely blow with SPCFM they charted 20th
all the other albums were top 3 after that including Idlewild
so while you can say the first album had hits and was big... its still not compared to how international they became
