Sampling is great, but it's about being creative with it.
Pretty much sums is up in the simplest way. When I make a beat I’m not going to limit myself to a specific era or timeframe for digging, inspiration is everywhere. Personally I can sample from any genre or any decade but I will do my best to make things my own. Where possible I like to sample 2-3 songs per beat because the fun of beatmaking for me is seeing what I can stitch together.

yup and sampling is endless.

that's the thing, it's about taking that sample and then finding a creative way to use it and shine light on it in a new way.

and the finding a sample from any genre is one of the many things that makes it fun to me. because sometimes. you find a sample from a genre of music that you would least expect you would find inspiration from.

trash is trash if it's sampled form 20 or 40 years ago. a MAJORITY of the music today is simply just not good, regardless of where it's sampled from
THIS is the problem.

2004 was 20 years ago (:damn:!!!). If somebody wanna sample something from that year, that's absolutely fine, just make it sound dope.

Problem is...they shyt don't sound good. :francis:

This is my view as well. I think it's clear these tracks aren't being sampled creatively, which isn't unique to this era (see: Bad Boy samples in the late 90s/early 00s). You can prob also compare the commercial intentions of producers now to Bad Boy era shyt (follow the trend, do it as quickly as possible, no real thought behind it, etc). So while I dislike the music I can't say this is a unique situation. We're kind of in a flat circle situation here where history is repeating.

One thing I will disagree with 9th on is that kids are not going back and learning the music due to samples. Media literacy is at an all time low right now. There are niches of young people that do research, sure. But overall I think there's a MAJOR problem with white and black Americans right now where art and culture isn't being passed down. We've got black and white kids exclusively listening to new rap/r&b or new pop/country pop. I don't sense the same cultural connections to past generations. I watched John Wayne movies with my grandparents, listened to Anita Baker with my mom and Luther Vandross with my dad. Today, Take Care (Drake) is too old for a lot of kids to fukk with. Anecdotally the oldest films my little cousins fukk with are Harry Potter and a couple Disney movies. This is bad...

Who cares how or what you sample. If it makes a hot track that fans of the artist ride to, then what does it fukkin matter? You gon pick up a hot date and she gets in the car while music jammin and she be like "Oh hell nah the the production on this beat is just a lazy loop!" and you gon be like "Word the nikka 9th Wonder broke this science down, babe. This track SOUNDS dope but we should turn it off cause it wasn't made with true producer nerd skill!"

I hate dorks, man... FOH

Eh.

9th, these “samples” aren’t even chopped or being replayed. Call a bullshǐt loop what it is — and there were trash loops in the 90s. And it’s one thing if the content in the song was Kendrick quality then I could understand but we are getting trash King Combs records or whatever Young Berg decides to scoop up.

And he said “we can’t get on these kids for not knowing” and that’s correct but who is teaching them because a 13 year old kid isn’t putting up the bread to buy a laptop or phone to consume content. Someone has to curate the news, culture, music and manners that these kids build their value system on.

For the kids today, you might not know where to look first but it’s laid out for you so feel just as hyped as we felt when we “discovered” 70s soul and 80s R&B.
Word!!! This nikka berg 38

It’s 2024.

1996 was 28 years ago.

Crush on You was released in 1996 and sampled Rain Dance made in 1979.

18 years apart.

The problem with this lame and a lot of you nikkas is you still don’t realize just how old you are now.

Their “back in the day” is not your “back in the day.”

Personally I don’t see a problem with how old the sample is. The problem is they’re going back and sampling Hip Hop songs and not doing a damn thing with the sample. There’s millions of songs of other genres from 1998 or 2004 to sample from but they’re just using a Hip Hop song and making another hip hop beat out of it. The whole point of sampling is usually to take something and make something ELSE out of it.

Sampling hot songs from a few years ago is not good. A lot of the shot is cheap. They can do it obviously and props for getting money, but lazy re-hashes just don’t sound good… sorry. 9th is going to be on these younger dudes side cause he don’t want to get called out himself. Puffy and them just looping up old songs was stupid and this new shyt is stupid too

What was done with the sample and if its dope, should be the discussion. And intricacies of it.

This question of Whether it should be done and timeframe is stupid. Sampling is hiphop. Nothing left to be said. Its in the fabric of the culture. Even breakdancing had sampling in it.
