I heard this argument recently about how Bret Hart MADE hbk, and thought of examples of this

As in

IMO

Foley MADE HHH during their feud
Kurt Angle arguably made Brock
HHH made Randy Orton for sure

Other examples?
How are we saying Trips made Randy? You have two examples there which I'm assuming is based on their feud/match work, but the only way you can say Trips made Randy is by picking him for Evolution. As when it comes to feud/match, Trips snuffed the fire right out of him (but then completely made Batista).

When I think of someone "making" someone else, I think of what legitimized them as an entity. As in, after their program/match, there was no turning back for them. So for that, I'd say

Razor made HBK.
HBK made Nash.

HHH is a unique case, as is The Rock, as I believed for them both, they made each other leading up to and at Summerslam '98 (obvious they were both stars for the future then). But then they both had Foley feuds when they got the belt where they got to work as the top guy in the company without being in the shadow of the bigger star at the time (Austin in the Rock's case, The Rock in Triple H's case).

For Brock, I think the answer is again a tricky one. The Hulk and Rock matches are so close together, but I don't know if the crowd is openly booing the Rock (who is a face) and cheering Heel Brock if he hadn't destroyed Hulk like no one had just weeks before.

Quite possibly. I hesitate from crediting anyone for Austin cause it could be JAKE, Bret, or Vince

I picked Bret, as Bret requested to work with Austin after he came back from his hiatus. SSeries 96, they knocked it out of the park, and then w/ WM13, we get an even better match between the 2 + the double turn. Which begins Austins face run, which went on the up and up and up for the next 2.5y, until the neck surgery. + w/ the fued with the Hart's/ Hart foundation, which lasted a whole year. (from the 1st Bret/Austin match, all the way thru to Owen/Austin 2 @ SSeries 97). Remember, 2 months after th KOTR, Austin didn't even make it on the SSlam 96 main card, vs Yoko w/ the turnbuckle spot on the pre-show or whatever it wascalled back then.

The Mr McMahon character might not of even happened if it wasn't for the screwjob. Yes, Vince vs Austin, is what moved the needle in the ratings in favour of the E in the Monday NIght
Wars, but Austin was already nuclear hot by the time Vince came into play as a nemesis.

This thread made me wonder. Did anyone "made" Cena? :patrice: maybe Edge? :mmmmm: how about Flair? I'm not sure you can give all the credit to Dusty there, maybe Wahoo?

Jumbo made Misawa
Flair made Luger
HHH made Batista

Cena's case is unique. Dude really got himself over on the strength of being on the show with the better, more selfless workers with better creative that allowed him to grow as a performer. The Brock feud was huge for him. Felt like he got that look out of nowhere. The match wasn't special but he basically built the framework for the rest of his career with that. The stuff with Eddie, the Taker feud.

What I will say, is that the Umaga match gave birth to BIG MATCH JAWN and was his coming out party as a genuinely great worker. Dude was getting nothing but hate from August '05 until Jan '07 when everyone outside of lunatics had to put some respect on what he was capable of in the ring.

corny :russell:

Kang was having CLASSIC ladder matches with Rock at Summerslam and was already a huge star before he went at Foley. We just going to forget the DX merch he pushed :heh:
Trips has said himself the feud with Foley solidified him as a top heel and legitimized his first title run. Nobody bought him as champion until their Rumble match in 2000.
