I assume he's adding strings to songs and skits, possibly providing samples, synths, programming etc. He was in a band before being known for Burton scores and the Simpsons.
I have no idea how ASAP determined this is the way to get his shyt out though lmao. But I'm certainly curious to see how this plays out, even if it's a trainwreck (which seems likely). A lot of 80s new wave and electronic bands loved hip hop since they were using the same drum machines, so Elfman probably fukks with the return of 808s.
