Compare pretty flacko and blacker the berry
If u think pretty flavcko provides half the energy vocally as blacker the berry ur handicapped
Yes there are different types of energy and yes being louder doesnt necessarily = more energy but its how u go about using your voice to convey certain emotion through your musicWay to ignore the rest of my post. But anyway, I'll answer your question. I'm doing today's good deed.
There are many types of energy when it comes to vocals. It's not just 'whose vocals are louder'. Rakim has more energy in a lot of his raps than most nikkas who shout. Because it's how Rakim projects his voice. His charisma and confidence is next level. That's why he can be laidback and still sound like "The God."
Kendrick raps like a whiny nikka with low self esteem. He's snarling his vocals on Blacker the Berry as a plead for attention. "Please listen to me!" on some rock shyt. Which would make sense given the grunge-like sensibilities. That kind of music is targeted toward cacs with low self esteem.
Kendrick's delivery, like a lot of modern cats, is hyper-nasal. When you're too nasal, you can't project authority. And when you can't speak with authority, it's hard to get people energized enough to care about what you have to say. This is public speaking 101. I'm dropping jewels on you right now.
Rocky (named after Rakim by the way), has a similar laidback energy to the god. He's nowhere near as nasal as Kendrick. He raps with more authority, and it comes from a rugged place. Which gives me energy. And as many people will tell you, his live shows are some of the craziest in the game. Charisma has a way of turning people wild.
Kendrick isn't built like that. At all.
The snarly semi growly vocals Kdot uses in Blacker the berry emphasizes the anger of the track
just like the cracked, more vunerable direction he takes with his voice on the song "u" helps emphasize the internal struggle and self hate of the track
Asap is not that diverse or energetic as no matter the song..the type of energy he releases is similar throughout is catalogue and doesnt do well to emphasize emotions such as pain, hurt, anger, sadness, joy etc etc.
Wait what???That's what Kendrick's trying to do. But it's too on-the-nose for you me to give a fukk. It feels fake, and if it isn't fake it's way too whiny. And I have no interest in being in either category.
Whiny shyt doesn't give me energy. It's the antithesis to hip hop as far as I'm concerned.
Right. It's too emo for me. I don't hate myself.
Again, that's not what rap is about. Hip hop is created for people to 'man up' to overcome struggle. That's why appearing to have strength/bravado is the number one thing a rapper has to have in hip hop. Or it used to be before this game turned straight emo.
Maybe I'm from a different generation, but Black males don't deal with pain, anger and sadness the same way white kids from the suburbs do. We're not that fragile, and we don't wanna be. With all the bullshyt we go through we have to K.I.M.
All the great rappers touch on those emotions you mentioned, but they do it in a way where they're coming from strength and authority. Kinda like a "yeah, I am there or I was there, but I'm dealing with or dealt with that. I moved on." And that's the power of hip hop. That you can move on and be stronger. Not wallow in your insecurities.
That 'insecurity' shyt is straight up grunge. It's 100% a cac influence on hip hop.
Rocky's whole charisma takes it back to what hip hop was really about. A song like "Demons" has all those emotions you mentioned, but it's a lot more subtle and subdued. Which allows Rocky to have the strength, the umph required to capture my attention. Notice how he punctuates "fiend", "lean", "stream" "King" and "dream". It's pretty fly shyt.
Cause I’m a microphone fiend! Gimme me the bass
Give me the beat, and let me lean, tap the vein, let it stream
Feel the pain, Young Martin Luther King, with a dream
nikka hip hop was originally created for people to party..which later evolved to other purposes
Did u just consider the concept of using ur voice to emphasize common human emotion as a "cac thing"?
Have u listened to the blues
Sht matter fact i dont even have to bring music
Have you ever been involved in spoken word community
This concept that Im speaking of in which Kendrick does in songs like "u" is something that puts blacks over whites in the spoken word realm, cuz of our ability to use our voices to express passion and emotion
WHo u tryna tell what rap is about? nikka da fck? Rap is literally "rythym and poetry"and the concept i speak of is one essential to be regarded as a good poet
But let u tell it Pac was the antithesis of rap cuz he was speaking on and using his voice to express the hardships of our people on songs like Pain
And how does the concept of the importance of vocal inflection mirroring emotion = someone not speaking on those emotions from a place of authority...
U know what u lost..Asap Rocky is empty and as a vocalist is hardly anything special...he'll be irrelevant in 2 years while this classic will be bumped 10 years from now
