I have to say, I didn’t experience any crime and nobody tried me.

The worst thing I experienced was people in Soweto begging for money and in both Soweto and maboneng people with out permission putting a DSLR in your face and trying to sell you pictures of yourself.

Capetown will have you letting your guard down. I stayed on point there too but it definitely didn’t feel like a place you need to stay on point despite warnings I had heard

Hey OP, Mzansi is beautiful and has beautiful people. I’m Zimbabwean and I have South African family, as some of my uncles married Zulu women.

The xenophobia isn’t as widespread as people make it out to be but it def is there. I had a taxi driver go on a tirade about Zimbos being thugs and criminals. He didn’t know I was a Zimbo tho cuz my first is Nguni. So I have a name that many Zulu and Xhosa people have. It was surreal and dude was pissed.

I think never dealing with apartheid in a meaningful way has damaged South Africa in a huge way. There is anger about the mistreatment but it manifests in GBV and xenophobia. The day white people get attacked en masse would be a point of no return for the country.

Also, classism is a problem all over Africa and the world, it just manifests very overtly in Southern Africa. Maids in the house is common and I understand that’s I likely jarring to see maids as an AA person. I have had other AA friends express similar discomfort with the maid thing when they went to visit Africa. I personally know many wealthy people who don’t keep maids but there are many who do.

Why do you think you won’t be visiting South Africa for a while??

South Africa’s economy is controlled by white people and white people run the country behind the curtains. White Boers are the reason that European countries invest in South Africa.

Heavy sanctions and international blacklisting would ensue if white people en masse were excommunicated or a culture of violence was perpetrated against them.

The root of the problem was Nelson Mandela aiding Boer supremacy by excusing pro-white violence and letting the whites off easy after apartheid in 94. His ex wife and pro-black revolutionary, Winnie, wanted a situation where wealth was redistributed to the black majority and trials would be held for high ranking officials who created the apartheid environment.

Mind you, I respect Madiba for his service and sacrifice to South Africa but his ideology allowed the white supremacists off the hook. Mama Madikizela (Winnie) had more direct and just means of dealing with the racists of apartheid and the Boers.

I said once they get get rid of the whites but they ready for the aftermath? Do they have a system ready to replace it. Nothing lasts forever.
