A Brooklyn school backed by Jay-Z said students could graduate debt-free. Now they're buried in it.

Celebrities need to stay out of education.

It takes a level of detail and hands-on that they simply can’t provide. And it’s unavoidable that they will need to hire a ton of people with a ton of responsibility and if those people do wrong, it will only be digested as the celebrity’s fault and paint them like a slum lord

There is no upside other than ego and there’s nothing but a history of failure yet they keep doing it: Diddy, Coach Prime, Bron, Kanye, Oprah, now jay z. Either they are egomaniacs or they’re washing money

It’s bad PR even if they are technically in the right

Also even if you chalk up the financial part to user error, they also mention subpar facilities.

For most students who have full ride academic scholarships, this is usually how it reads.

John Forte went through the exact same thing with NYU, in like '92. He's from Brooklyn. Was told that he had a full scholarship, didn't read everything, hopped into a dorm and was told he had a bill for housing. He had to sneak in and out of the dorms for a minute because he didn't know he would owe. Full ride is for tuition. Housing is not included in that. It's optional. Nothing misleading about that, but people want to make this an issue because it's a Jay venture. The other damn near 300 students didn't have an issue reading. 12 did.

The paperwork literally says the tuition is the only thing covered. It's right there. In plain English. People gotta stop unnecessarily creating issues with that dude, for sh*t he's not responsible for.

Yeah it says COMBINED WITH GRANTS they could graduate debt free.

My dad works at Weil, Gotshal in the city. He's an attorney. So I grew up reading everything!

I was taught to not agree to anything before you read and understood it. So if you look at the numbers, only 4% didn't do their homework. 4! This wasn't like the contracts I saw in the music business. This was plain English given to students who were from NYC. So housing wasn't even necessary for most of them. So this is not one of those cases where people were preyed upon. This is about those very few people just not reading. And when you see the other almost 300 who did read flourishing, you can clearly see that there will always be a small amount of people who don’t want to take accountability for their f*ck up's.
I’m not saying you’re wrong - I’m saying that most people don’t understand what the fukk they’re reading and it’s why they go get someone who does. Everyone doesn’t have a big law pops. Whenever I go to the doctor’s office I read everything and the nurses always laugh that I must be a lawyer because we’re the only ones who do.

How can you not know that if room and board isnt included you cant advertise ‘debt free’

There was no reason to include that. No serious company with a modicum of experience in the educational sphere would EVER clear that type of language.

When universities give athletes scholarships it’s a FULL ride and it’s all inclusive—-and they still don’t say “debt free ” bc again I’m not even a lawyer and that seems unnecessarily binding.

So Roc Nation is either negligent or they did it on purpose for the optics. To make it seem they were giving a full ride when they’re not.

Exactly.

But they're not reading. The tuition support doesn't even come from the Roc Nation school. It comes from LIU. That includes those state and federal grants. No different than any other school. Thing is, the Roc Nation name is on it, so people are gonna blame Jay, lol. That's the first thing. The whole Hope scholarship thing is for like 25% of the students there.

The paperwork says that housing IS NOT included in the scholarship. So this isn't buried in some contract in fine print. Tuition is like $40,000. So they're getting that covered. But if they choose to get into health insurance, housing, meals and everything else, that's an extra $20,000. But all of that is NOT tuition. People said in the interviews that they didn't read all of that and thought they could go to a "Jay-Z school for free". You can, but only for your TUITION. They took on more than they were promised and agreed to, and want to blame Hov. That's wild.

I get that.

But most people at this school DID understand what they were reading. That's what I'm saying. I went online and read it myself in a few minutes and could clearly see that they're saying only the tuition was covered. For those of us that went to school, we all know tuition doesn't include health insurance, apartments and meals, lol. Most of the kids that go there and went there clearly understood that and graduated without debt.

It's the very few that didn't actually read who got caught up. One of the mothers said she didn't even bother to read what the kid was applying for, but told them to do it if it was free. So there were parents who saw Jay's name on this thing and saw "free" and just told their kids to apply. That's not them being misled, that's them not doing their due diligence.

Point went over your head. Universities give athletes full rides and even they don’t use language like ‘debt free’.

‘Graduate Debt free’ I have literally never heard that before. Now if Roc Nation didn’t advertise it like that then it’s not on them.
