2 big reasons, its easy to pick the winners but hard to pick the losers. Look at Apple for instance. Individual investors thought they were so smart as it keep going up, now they're all :sadbron: reason being, stock go down for reasons other than a company's success. Primarily because big money decides to bet against them. Often times for no logical reason. There is no way for an individual investor to get this info ahead of time. The below article explains it. Just get a low expense index fund that pays a dividend and let it do what it do. 20-25 years of compounding will do the rest.
