A credit card should not be used for emergencies. It's a trap to stay in debt.

He's not really addressing the operative word... "emergency"

If its a true emergency, do you have the option of not paying?
If you had money saved up for a true emergency, you wouldn't use your credit card anyway

I understand what he's trying to say, but I would like to hear his definition of a true emergency

If it’s your only option, you take it. I stopped using credit cards like 4 years ago. I buy everything straight up, in full. If I can’t buy it all at once, I keep saving or don’t buy it at all.

If I was stranded in a different state unable to get back home, I think using a credit card for that emergency would be justified. Also, maybe you need serious surgery and your copay in like $5K. Since it’s life or death, using a credit card is justified.

I really see credit cards as a safety blanket. Buying stupid shyt with a credit card is stupid shyt though.

Can be a trap. But you can pimp the hell outta the right cards if you have the cash to pay for what you put on the credit cards.

Exclusively use credit cards for everything...get free flights, food, benefits, and cash back. I pay them off weekly or monthly.

Different strokes for different folks

Credit card companies like casinos. They always win cause the odds in their favor. Will there be people who will be extremely disciplined every time and never in life pay interest, or truly only use for emergency purposes and pay it back fairly quickly? Sure. But overall, most people will pay some type of interest on a regular basis or get deep in dept. The already have the data. Even people who are super good with money will likely come across hard times or rough patches. They know that it will always work out for them in the long run. That’s why they constantly increase your limits if you pay on time. They will give you enough rope to hang yourself.

With that said, it don’t mean you shouldn’t utilize credit. But obviously, the credit industry only exist cause it’s very profitable.

He definitely has never heard of the AMEX Platinum/Gold cards.

He would be talking somewhat facts if Credit Cards had no benefits besides being Safety blankets. You can get whole flights, hotel stays, rental cars, and other types of benefits with them. Cash back/points is literally free money.

This. I use my credit cards 99% of the time, stack my points, pay it off every month automatically.

A year or so, switch up and get a new main card with those nice bonuses. Vacay, doubling cash back, hotels, too easy to pass up

Credit cards (with rewards) are a life cheat code if you use them like a debit card, meaning you only swipe if you have the cash/funds in your bank account to pay it off right then and there.

Never carry a balance, always pay it off at the end of the month, and you'll get cash back/gifts and raise your credit so you can get the best rates when it comes time to get a mortgage, refinance, or get a car loan.

Just have to have some discipline and treat it the same way you use your debit card. Don't buy shyt that you couldn't buy with your debit card.

I opened a new card in March just for the $200 signup bonus. I used the card just for groceries that I as already going to buy, paid it off right then and there, and then put the card away. Free $200:yeshrug:
