it started like a year ago. i think i read that labels didn't want their artist to release albums as mixtapes for free anymore. then it picked up steam and now the most basic datpiff rapper will drop an ep for their generic music
The music industry is dead. I was talking to my barber about this while I was getting my haircut earlier today. The album is dead. I remember when I was a youngin in the 90s and buying an album on tape or CD was an experience. Listening to the album with the TV on mute...looking at the cover art while listening to it.
Now? Most people are downloading it for free and the artwork (there is alot of terrible and half-assed artwork that has been released in the past couple of years) is an afterthought and people are just putting their favorite tracks on and deleting the rest...so what's the point of releasing an album if people don't even care about it? This generation doesn't even value music as an art anymore and seem to forget the business part of it...they aren't dropping shyt for free it all costs money and if they can't recoup that what's the point? Might as well drop 4-6 tracks instead of 10-15.
this is called the music business. it's better to sell 20k EPs then drop an album, than get 3 million Datpiff downloads and nobody buys your album…. ex meek mill
EPs and single sales are the best way to profit now.
Don't you hear stories of labels trying to make nikkas albums 10 or tracks long?
They're cutting down on expenses to maximize profits.
shyt....nowadays, artists can eat off shows so all they need is EPs and mixtapes. And a little following. Digital releases save money too so that's a trend as well.
