My grandparents and great grandparents lived on their own farms.

You had dogs for hunting in the woods, dogs for herding shyt and cats for mice/rats.

Get you a few cats and there'll be nothing but rat and mice skeletons with balls of fur on the property. Traps are more for urban and suburban living where you don't want a bunch of semi-feral cats running around.
