Different eras and different philosophies driving the league

90's was the era of Defense Wins Championships, and it actually continued until 2005.

The league average was 98 points a game when the 05 Suns averaged 110 for the season. Ever since then nearly everyone's gone to running and hoisting up 3s at a rate not seen since the ABA.

.

I dont think thats a dated concept....When is the last time a team that wasn't a top 10 defense won a championship? Even i this era...

If Cleveland pulls off the unthinkable and wins this series it will be because of their defense... Those Heat teams were defensively dominant...

Ain't about total points allowed. Those Suns teams were solid in defensive efficiency. They gave up points because they played lots of possessions. Some play fast and other play slow. As for it being until 2005, they next year in the 2006 finals, neither team ever cracked 100 points in regulation the entire series.

For starters you have to consider that blocks and steals weren't official stats until 73, almost 30 years after the leagues inception. So you have guys like Wilt and Russell not even being included in the discussion. The greatness of the players has something to do with it as well. I mean you got Pip, GP, Jordan, Dream, Rodman, Mutombo, Robinson all playing at the same time. That is just special. I would also say that expansion and the shift towards a more physical, slow it down type style (which I think are related) played a big part. Think about it, you went from 23 to 29 teams in what 7 or 8 years. You had players that just flat out didn't belong in the league out there or guys who should've been bench players starting out of necessity. You can get by with effort on defense, if you don't have skills on offense you are gonna be food, especially to the all time great defenders.
This cost Kareem 4 years of credited shot blocking and steals too, and he retired as the all time leader while sitting at number 3 behind Hakeem and Dikembe now.

The offenses were bad in the 90s

It's much harder to play defense in today's NBA

You just can't sag off your defender in the paint and play help off ISO ball

There is so much passing and 3 point shooting in today's game that player have to gaurd larger areas

That's a myth.. Rockets, Suns, Sonics, Blazers, Jazz, Spurs, Bulls, Pacers, Etc could all score

Look David stern bytch ass ruined the PHYSICAL part of the game with the rule change

Basketball today is still good, but the physical play isn't there cause of the change

I read that dumb sh1t like a year ago...

"Coaches are smarter now because they have scouting and film study"

:skip:

We're talking about 1995 not 1895

:camby:

"The ‘90s were littered with young players with promise who never panned out due to drugs and increasing character issues in the mid-nineties, leaving teams that were lacking in real depth. The NBA started giving rookies way too much power and money"

More dumb sh1t...

I assume this piece was written by a cac that never made varsity for a 4A high school...

THE NBA AVERAGED MORE POINTS, ASSISTS, STEALS & BLOCKS IN THE 90S THAN THEY HAVE OVER THE LAST 10 SEASONS.
