The funniest thing was watching nikkas in the Clarence Avant thread come up with all these crazy conspiracy theories because they were too damn embarrassed to acknowledge that the perp was probably black. “Clarence is connected, it was probably a white mob hit.”

I'd hope that nobody on here thinks that. Poverty is obviously a huge underlying issue.

But that said I'm not going to act like the fact that a lot of black people grow up listening to music that glorifies murdering other black people isn't a factor.

More often than not they don't think of it as "their" culture, moreso some shyt that they listen to for fun. Unfortunately a lot of black kids grow up with it and consider that shyt as an actual lifestyle to aspire to.

The music isn't the only component here and there's a marked difference in the ways the music is consumed by white kids and Black kids. For one group, it's no different than watching a movie for the other, even if they aren't living that life, they are products of the communities that many of the people that rap about murdering Black people come from.

Nuance in this conversation is rarely found. People are way too emotional and quick to throw around accusations instead of talking.

I will say, I don't consider it selling out or being a c00n if a person has an opinion that isn't centered on hate and they only discuss it with fellow black folks. A c00n is the one who goes out into nonblack spaces and say these things and make an effort to show them they are one of the "good ones". Outside of that, black folks should be comfortable to discuss this amongst themselves imo.

I can name numerous moderately successful rappers, athletes, and street dudes that have dropped bodies or are dead themselves (not even mentioning the participation and glorification of other crime besides murder). The majority of popular Rap music is about how much “money” you posses and how many nikkas you’ve killed. Cut it out.

To be honest, part of the issue is there is ideological authoritarianism amongst a lot of black folks that keeps certain things from being discussed openly and honestly. Crime in our communities and possible causes is one of them. There is an approved orthodoxy amongst some black folks who wish to gatekeep how and what about the topic can be discussed. Any deviation outside of institutional or external causes is shouted down or dismissed outright which prevents divergent ideas from being discussed to any substantial extent.

I would say given the above, simply normalizing dissent and disagreement amongst black folks on this topic is a big step.

I use the word authoritarianism because in a way it is. Most people want to fit in and don't want to deal with the stigma and hostility with the typical name calling that goes on or the emotional reaction it generates. Therefore it causes a significant amount of people to self censor and leaves only those who have an "approved" view and the few who are "brave" enough to dissent. Emphasis on the quotes around brave.

This whole dynamic needs to go imo and it's a big first step to actual fixes. Because right now, only the people who operate in the framework that gatekeepers deem appropriate are given respect and who people are strongly encouraged to listen to or respect.
