A man in Singapore was given the death penalty after authorities found him with 2 pounds of cannabis.

Omar Yacob Bamadhaj, 41, was sentenced to death in February, and a court dismissed his appeal on Tuesday, Channel News Asia reported.

He was sentenced to death by hanging, the outlet said.

He was convicted of bringing at least 2 pounds of cannabis into Singapore in 2018. Authorities found it wrapped in foil and newspaper in the trunk of the car he was in while his dad was driving, the report said.

His lawyers said there was doubt about whether he knowingly brought the drug into the city-state. Bamadhaj argued in court that he didn't know what was in the trunk and that other people had put it there without him knowing, according to Channel News Asia.

But he'd said when he was arrested that his acquaintances had convinced him to bring the substance into Singapore and that he didn't want to do it but needed the money, the report said.

He also argued at one point that drug-enforcement officers had "coerced" him into an admission, saying an officer had threatened to hang him and his father if he refused to confess, Channel News Asia reported.

Singapore outlaws possession, consumption, and the importing and exporting of cannabis.

Singapore is known for its strict law enforcement, and human-rights groups have long been critical of Singapore's use of the death penalty

Why do Singapore take such a harsh stance against weed? The death penalty?

Couldn't live there and not sure if I would visit...
Give a inch crackheads take a mile.

Britain had that side of the world strung the hell out so they could get cheap tea and the silver they sent over there to pay for it I believe. That caffeine is no joke.

That side of the world had a hard time getting all the opium addicts out of society and probably see drug use as a step back.

This video is specifically about Singapore and opium

Zero tolerance policy is taken in a lot of Asian cultures when it comes to drugs. They are very much collectivist culturally. This translates to a lot of political and social thought being in the context of how the individuals actions affect the whole.

This is opposite to how Americans think . For example, when we think of drug use, we view it as the harm it causes to the individual or even atomize it to the individual further by saying that what I do to myself is no one else's business. In Asian culture, if the individual is not conforming then he is hurting the whole body. A crime against the individual in this context is a crime against the whole body of society. It's viewed as corrupting the whole of society when things they view as destructive is done by one individual.

people be like oh they solved homelessness and the streets are so clean

but then on the flip side they have this type of law system that is archaic and heavy handed.

beware of any society that lets people rule with an iron fist

Asian nations might be developed on the surface but they lag behind when it comes to human rights and freedoms. wouldn't trade that up for some clean streets

I used to want to live in Singapore, but the more I see shyt like this and how they pretty much turn the place into a nanny system, fukk that:scust:.

There was a video on YouTube where this guy jumped in front of a train. Next thing you know they put a fence up to stop anybody from doing it.

Everything from the overkill amount of self serving stores to the crazy ass laws. It's not worth the effort to live there.

Americans and Westerners as a whole love talking down on some of these societies. Calling them archaic blah blah.

One thing I’ve come to realize in America is that the average person doesn’t know or refuses to behave themselves in a society to a degree that is good for the rest of society. Things like littering, drug use, small government so I can do whatever I want etc…these are things that need tougher stances from a ruling authority. America is a rebellious society at baseline so we look at these things as abnormal or unfair but Singapore governs in a way that works for them and if you break the rules you know what will happen.
