So my roommate is an a$$hole. I think it’s pretty important that I get that out of the way first. Between not using headphones late in the night when playing his shytty jump-cut-ey Youtube vlog garbage to bringing loud strangers into our room at early hours in the morning to sleep on the floor, he’s a nightmare to room with. I’d be lying if I said that this didn’t, in some way, affect what I did today.
It’s Valentine’s Day and love is in the air, or whatever, so he and his band of misogynistic, testosterone charged dikk-heads are actively on the prowl to solicit sex from some emotionally vulnerable teenaged girl. They all came into our room this morning while I was sleeping and their chatter on the subject matter woke me up. It’s their usual nonsense. “They just tryna smash” and what not.
Their discussion is centered on my roommate, who, during the conversation, is texting a girl who is interested in him. I’ve overheard, and have been told in person, that this girl seems to be quite attached to him. Before today, he’s shown little interest in her and has even referred to her frequent and consistent attempts at getting together with him as ‘annoying.’ Angry, annoyed and curled under my sheets, I hear him and his friends coach him into texting her to ask for sex. It’s not nearly that direct, but he texts her with invitations to leave her house and come over to our room on campus. “You won’t be so lonely if you come over, bae” etc. I’m cringing and angry for so many reasons at this point. I know with certainty that this girl has feelings for my roommate and he’s clearly exploiting her for sexual pleasure and it’s apparent that he and his ‘squad’ have very little concern for her emotional well-being. She’s an item to them: a prize.

He and his friends leave the room to get breakfast/lunch together.
I check my roommate’s ‘recently added’ section of his friends list. It was easy to find this girl. She has a unique name. I temporarily create a fake Facebook account and message her. I tell her I’m anonymous helper that doesn’t want to see anyone get hurt. I tell her that the ‘boys only want one thing’ narrative is unfortunately true much of the time. I tell her he’s only after that one thing and it’d be very wise of her to not grow and attached and not allow him to use her like that.
She is understanding and tells me that she probably knows deep down that he only wants to use her but won’t let him. She thanks me and wishes me a happy Valentine’s Day. She has told my roommate that she can’t make it this evening and is going home for the break.
I feel really good inside. Should I? Have I protected a young woman from emotional heartache? Am I doing it out of spite for my roommate or because it felt like the right thing to do? Is it even any of my business? Does that matter? Do I suck?
TL;DR I anonymously told a girl who my roommate wants to have sex with that he is only interested in her for sex and now she won’t have sex with him.
