Come on man.

What young R&B singer was fukking with Brandy in the 90s?

Run out of steam? Never Say Never sold nearly 3x more than Brandy.

Tv show
Movies
Barbie Doll
Broadway

I loved Aaliyah and cried when she passed... but come on now.

Brandy ran out of steam in the 2000s

Aaliyah was still going strong

From the most objective standpoint i can write from, Aaliyah would've lasted until 2007ish and then faded off into acting. Brandy was done by the time Full Moon dropped. Monica was hotter than Brandy around the time if you wanna be honest as So Gone was a banger.

Exactly. And I love Brandy but we gotta keep it real. No way did Brandy impact the culture the way Aaliyah did. There’d be no alternative r&b lane right now if there was no Aaliyah.

Brandy had a dope reign but she peaked early whereas Aaliyah was growing.

I think Aaliyah was fading before she died imo. Beyonce was starting to rise. Out of the 3 (Brandy, Monica, Aaliyah) I think she remained in 3rd or was maybe neck to neck with Monica. I believe at the time, Brandy was the most successful of the 3.
No knock on Aaliyah because she did her own thang and when linked up with Timbo, made some of my fav songs but just keeping it real :hubie:

She wasn't fading.. Most of these dumbass clowns in society are just stingy af with purchases or dumbed down and can never recognize new, innovative music

People love to act like they were always on someone's team after they die. If the lazy fukks actually bought that masterpiece like they should've, she'd still be here.

Nah. By the time Aaliyah died, she was creeping up to that #1 spot. Romeo Must Die was a smash, Try Again went #1 strictly off AirPlay, etc etc. Brandy and Monica were both fading by that time.

2000-2001 was an interesting period.

Breh numbers prove she was fading before her death. Numbers prove that Beyoncé and Brandy were bigger than her before she passed.

Brandys "never say never" in 98 was bigger than anything Aaliyah has ever done. Destinys child "the writings on the wall" and "survivor" in 99 and 01 were both bigger than anything Aaliyah has ever done.

The Aaliyah, timbo, missy, ginuwine crew brought a fresh new innovative sound in the mid 90's, and one in a million is an undeniable classic but thinking Aaliyah was the biggest artist out before she left is incorrect.

who's more popular Adele or Beyonce???

i'll wait.

Wtf adele is

Her last two albums sold 20 and 30 million worldwide. Hello, someone like you, and rolling in the deep are some of the biggest singles ever. I resold my adele tickets for over triple what I paid. At the end of the day adele (along with swift) has an audience that would never even give Beyoncé a chance. Also at this point Beyoncé is a legacy act so the point you thought you were going to make wouldn't have worked in the situation. Neither Aaliyah or Brandy were legacy acts in the 90's.

What did you think I was gon say :heh:

Dead singers get better promotion. It was pretty common up until her death for people to say Aaliyah was not a good singer or live performer. I didn't hold this opinion because I saw nor heard her perform live. From what I heard on the radio she was a pretty good singer. She doesn't have too much vocal range but hey, if you have a lane, own it. It wasn't until after her death that people really started appreciating then vastly overrating her. A lot of factors there; youth, she had a popular song out (Rock the Boat) so she was very visible at the time, and she was on the cusp of "blowing up" because she had a role in the Matrix. And Aaliyah was already a star so she was on the verge of super-stardom and it was all gone in an instant. I think people tried to foist that icon tag on her posthumously.

:russ:/:snoop: that every Aaliyah thread turns into a Monica, Brandy, Beyonce debate :gucci:

shyt, every Aaliyah video got the same debate in the comments

cause mufukkas dont know how to appreciate Aaliyah without saying ridiculous, revisionist ass shyt...

cant be "Aaliyah was dope as fukk :blessed:"

it gotta be "Beyonce woulda been working at Wendys if Aaliyah was still alive :dame:"

then nikkas gotta come in and go to the other extreme and start picking her apart.

:stopitslime:

@smokeurobinson started it. :mjlol:

All I did was call Aaliyah the Queen and it turned into this.

Aaliyah WAS the Queen and still is Queen. And nikkas are just gonna have to deal with that. It is what it is. Nothing will change it.

Romie must die was a movie and was just okay. Try again was off a soundtrack. What about those record sales? I vividly remember those times and she was creeping towards anything. Her time was 97 and backwards.. dat way. I love Aaliyah though. Hot like fire remix is in my 10 ten songs. Just love it.

When you think back to the 90s, Mary J and Mariah ran that decade from a commercial/consistency/influence standpoint. Anything after those two women, it gets a little gray.

R&B back then was a very diverse space. Like somebody else said, it was so many r&b stars that were poppin back then. In retrospect, Aaliyah was definitely a heavyweight in the sense that she was original, made dope music and carved out her own lane that was ahead of the game by some years.

By the time she died, she was crossing over but she was already exalted as Queen and trailblazer. Her third album debuted at #2 with the highest first week sales of her career, she had beaten out Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the VMAs, etc. Aaliyah was well on her way to exploding.

Brandy was bigger than Aaliyah in the 90s BUT Brandy peaked early and didn’t really sustain any of her 90s success going into the 00s. Aaliyah was growing.
