I'm old and my parents were kinda old when they had me so I suspect it was known, my mother just chose not to continue it. My logic is based on the fact that I was taught all kinda 'ancient' ados folkways that are no longer widely known, ie hoodoo, hambone, etc.

You know, its interesting. I started out as a linguistics major (bc I love words and, by extension, languages). Shockingly, I was encouraged to join NSBE (nat'l society of black engineers, parties was LIT ) bc, apparently, linguistics is an academic gateway to coding and such. Who knew?

I said all that to say, Americans are almost uniquely monolingual. Anything, even a fun intellectual exercise, that expands our acuity with unknown languages is a win in my book. They're essentially speaking in code and thus practicing code breaking, another win. These are the games that create nimble minds and highlight those who might actually be good at coding and stuff. It's all the same shyt.

This is dope. Marginalized populations have always created variants of the dominant language (that's basically where slang comes from) through sheer creativity and as a way of haviing a culture of its own/not be understood by the dominant group. Code and community in a sense.

That's what it was. In fact, one if the defining features of AAVE is slang. Not as a linguistic throwaway, but bc we change lexicon when wp figure it out. It's always been cryptography.
