I can't find the article for the one with my uncles friend because it happened in the nineties but from those two you can see it happens.
You can believe it or but if you do end up riding you'll learn to be careful on bridges because there is no escape path. One of the things other riders and the classes will teach you is always have an escape path when your riding either an empty lane or an empty shoulder. A bridge has a wall and lanes so you get fukked if someone drives into your lane.
