"...for acting, directing and possibly even best picture." :win:

'Straight Outta Compton' Is Being Seen as a Possible Oscar Contender

Straight Outta Compton is having a killer opening weekend, pulling in a projected $56.1 million and scoring rave reviews from the majority of film critics and fans. And after a screening for Academy Award voters the N.W.A. biopic is now being seen as one of the first potential Oscar contenders of the year.

According to THR, Universal has become "bullish" about the film's award show prospects. Attendance was higher than usual at Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theatre, which screens most major releases. Those in attendance gave a round of applause to Compton's pre-credit scene, with the warm reception continuing after the film ended.

"It succeeds as a studio picture while transcending what that usually is," an Academy member told THR. "It’s a very visceral, poetic, terrific film. It is worthy of some real consideration, particularly I think for acting, directing and even best picture—but, but, it’s very early in the season, and there are a zillion other pictures coming out."

While it's still very early, Compton could become the surprise Oscar contender for 2016. But it'd be far from the first time N.W.A. shocked the world.

:blessed:

They just want black people to pump up their ratings while they give the Oscars to some obscure film. I don't give a fukk about awards shows anyway.

I think the point is that the success of this film shows these Hollyweird fakkits that YES, people DO want to see OUR (Black peoples') stories and will turn out in droves to do so. I saw it twice over the weekend and both times there were AMPLE old white couples in the theater (I'm talkin', like, 60 years old and such).

You would THINK they would have learned this by now - the success of "Ray", for example - but you know how it go in Hollywood, yo. They SWEAR nobody wants to hear our stories.

So this is a big thing in terms of us getting to see what we WANT finally, as opposed to having movies dictated to us. This movie about to do over $100M worldwide and possibly garner Oscar talk.

That's huge for this genre, whether people wanna believe that or not.

Highly doubt it, even though I think the movie was great

Once the "Oscar season" of movie releasing starts this fall, and you see all the political games being played, no shot in hell they letting this get nominated

I don't disagree with the statement above. Yeah I bet there were old white folks in the theater. NWA and ice-t had folks shook in the early 90's. Could you imagine the president of the U.S. coming for you back in those days. Those old white folks remember these guys and their kids bought their music.

But in terms of OSCAR consideration it's just like the Grammys: we shouldn't be looking for validation only dollars.

even if they're nominated it would be a win if you're old enough to remember the controversy first hand surrounding the groups music and how they were universally embraced.

they are considered the godfathers of gangsta rap birthed the an overwhelming number of the artist who came after them. i'd watch if they were nominated.

This is great but it's sad that the main people hating on the movie are black women. They truly don't wanna see black men win. They wanted the movie to fail and it didnt now they re saying it's being praised to push an agenda :snoop:. How about it was just a great film? Black women please stop hating and congratulate.

whether it gets nominated or not, just the buzz is enough. not even in terms of validation, but to hopefully help launch the careers of some new black actors. the cat playing eazy did a great job, that buzz will hopefully help him get some looks he'd never otherwise get.
